Help copying my Wordpress blog to a new domain

    Hi there,

I've recently purchased a domain name and have also received some web hosting.
I've gone through the Fantastico De Luxe set up to install Wordpress on the hosting, but when I go to my domain it is just an empty blog (hasn't got any files from my own blog at Wordpress).

Would appreciate any help at all :)
    Thanks. Matt

Go to your old wordpress site (I guess domain points now to new server, so best way is to ask your old hosting how to acces your files without domain, usually something like www.yourhost.com/Ëœdomain_user_username/). Than go in WP administration panel and there is an option to export your posts somewhere (but your blogroll will not be exported I think).

Than go to your new wordpress installation and in your admin panel click import and import the file. Should work. If it doesn't let me know, you'll need to export database through phpmysql directly.

I've exported the files from the blog and have saved them to my computer.

I can't seen to find an import file option on my hosting package. Should I contact the hosts?

Thanks for the help jasonsc, reps given :)

You need to log in your wordpress admin panel. Than look for import options in there.

    Thanks for the rep!

Do I need to log in to my wordpress admin panel on my web hosting package?
I've clicked on Fantastico but it just has a link to my site, and says I can't upload any more MySQL databases.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

    Thanks

Yes, you need to go directly to wordpress front page and than click "Admin" - as if you would want to write a new post. Than look for import somewhere in there.

Oh right, I've got a cPanel - do you know what I would be looking for? Any certain section?

Thanks for your help so far :)

I don't know how to write a post to my new blog, no - I just installed it on the web host, not actually sure how to do anything to the blog.

Right - I've managed to upload my blog content to my new domain :)

One last thing - with the old wordpress blog, is there a way of getting it to redirect to my new URL? Or will it always be separate?

    Thanks for any help.

I didn't have an old domain - it was just a Wordpress blog.

Then I decided to get a domain, and hosting, and put Wordpress on the hosting and then copy the blog across.

Not too sure how to do a re-direct from my old Wordpress blog though :(

oh, i see. Can't help you there, I don't know how wordpress has that set up for people that no longer use their hosting. Maybe see there faq or something, I am sure this subject is covered somewhere.

If you had a hosted blog on the wordpress domain, then it's pretty unlikely for you to be able to do any redirects as you have no access or rights to the server
