Buying Traffic + CPM = Path to success?

Many people that buy traffic are looking for the traffic to click on an adsense ad or fill out an affiliate offer. That, as we all know, simply will not work and is a waste of money.

BUT, what if you get that traffic sent to the site (All unique IPs), and you have CPM ads in place? After all, more traffic = more page views = higher revenue from CPM!

Say you buy 10,000 hits per day (which gives you 10k pages views) for $20.00, and you have a CPM of $5 (Could be higher or lower, depends on your site). That would net gross you $50 and net you $30. That is a 60% profit margin!

This, of course is somewhat hard to do because you must have CPM ads in place.

So, is there anything wrong with this thinking?

Seems a very nice idea if you know what are you doing, if the traffic that you are buying is good enough

Your analysis is based that every single person that enter to your site is going out from a certain door.

The problem with any bought traffic is whether it is real traffic or automated traffic.

Any CPM company will normally have adequate protection that discounts any traffic that mimics bot activity - whether it is unique IP or not. It will discount things like all known search bots as well as traffic coming from any known 'traffic generator' sites.

The theory is sound, but the reality of the situation is that it will still be much better to work on long term repeat traffic than buying any form of traffic.

(In effect, you are buying traffic indirectly by submitting information to other sites if you include a link back to your site and have paid to submit the information (press releases, articles etc))

You'll probably find that the majority of bought traffic is pure junk; ie bots; which most respectable ad companies will have mechanisms in place to combat.

If you do get away with it, its likely that one of two things will happen:

    - If the company serving your ads is in such poor shape that it doesn't have the necessary preventative measures in place to combat autosurf bots etc; then don't be surprised if they're similarly shoddy in other areas... ie paying you what you've "earned"

    - If they don't have measures in place now, theres a good chance they will in the future, and when that happens, wave goodbye to your account.

That is only possible if your site converts well.

If I deliver 5-6 figure hits, and only 3 figure clicks and no conversions, i get 15 cents.

    If I get 1 conversion, it's about 50 cents.

4 conversions (1 atleast on a popup) my cpm is $44!

The only flaw is that you'd need a way to get those 10,000 visitors for $20, without using autosurf, paid to surf, etc. Traffic from those services is usually not included in impression data, if the advertiser (ad network) is any good at all.

Getting $5 CPM is another problem, but not as big. Just have multiple lower CPM ads on the same page. And to get more profit, you could have other ads or affiliate links that may generate additional revenue from interested visitors.

In conclusion, the thinking is sound, but you'll need to find solutions to those two problems first. That may not be easy.

Edit: Why is everyone else talking about CPC of CPA? The OP asked about CPM.

You get paid more for unique visitors than you do return - keep that in mind!

So the trick is using different companies, and different sizes.

Also with popups, set a cap that is more than 6 hours - it converts pretty well from that mark onwards.

Sutocu, they are probably talking about CPC and CPA because some CPM companies offer it.

It means for each click, or conversion, you get a higher CPM. It is effective imo.

So you mean eCPM? (Effective cost per 1000)

It's kind of related, but if you are buying 10,000 visitors for $20, they are probably not targeted enough to generate CPC or CPA ad revenue.

The traffic that is being bought is, if picked, targeted. It is delivered from showing my site in a full window in a pop under when people visit websites in their ad network.

The CPM stuff is all in place already for me, luckily. I will have to speak to them about it.

    Hmm... This could work!

When will people realize, the path to success is hard work, research, experimentation and persistence.

When someone pays for cpm ads, they still expect clicks, they are buying it for hopes of conversions. So you are gonna send a shitload of crappy traffic to trick them into thinking their ad is displaying to targeted traffic. Just because its not PPC doesn't mean they don't expect performance.

Buying traffic + cpm is lame. The best way is what every else mentioned and that's natural traffic for CPM. Sooner or later you will be caught.

I've heard of people doing this, but it doesn't scale well and you will lose your advertisers. It's a bad deal all around.

I agree that you would get caught easily. I can even make a script that will take under 30 minutes to make that could catch you. These networks already have this security software in place.

If you want to do well online then why don't you try and make a site with good quality organic traffic.
