Windows XP Home anyone?

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Weirfire, Nov 7, 2005.

    Has anyone got a copy of Windows XP Home that I could borrow?

    I have a CD Key but I only have a dodgy copy of XP pro that a dodgy guy at uni gave me. I will pay for the postage to and from your place of residence.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hmmm I dont know lol. I'll have a look. :)

    Mine came preinstalled as well but as you might of seen on another thread I had to buy a new hard drive :( The new hard drive cost me £50 which wasn't bad except for the fact I bought a battery at £70 as well because I thought that was the problem. So far so good with the new hard drive. No noises or breakdowns so far.

    Mine was only 18 months old but it's been used heavily for about 16 hours/ day average as well as having hot chocolate poured over it as well as being dropped and knocked around while travelling. It's been on around 30 flights, 6 train journeys, 10 bus journeys and a gazillion car journeys so I guess sooner or later odds were it would break lol. I should have got a Dell though. Never mind eh?

    Depends on the restore disk, some will not work on any machine other than what they were intended for, unless you find a way around it.

    To WF, do you know what XP Home version you had and is the same as the US version?

    No idea, not sure if it's the same or not? Didn't intend to sound like an idiot but I honestly wasn't sure :)

    Also do you know if you have the original distribution or sp2? Not sure if that matters with your key code or not, I 'think' it might but could be wrong.

    I picked up an OEM copy without a serial number from ebay really REALLY cheaply when I needed to reinstall.

    Who invented recovery discs eh? What a crap idea. Just give me the operating system that I paid for please.

    I have no idea what that means lol.

    It's a real pain in the ass getting all the drivers installed again. I can't find half of them :(

    I have an enclosure case arriving in the next few days so hopefully I'll be able to figure out a way of copying them all over.

    To be honest I don't even know the name of the graphics card that I need to install lol.

    And my mouse doesn't scroll any more :eek:

    Don't you have the drivers that came with the computer, the software? XP is usually good at auto detecting or using windows update to find drivers via the web compared to older versions at least.

    Here is the laptop I have. Any clues as how I would find out the graphics card inside this laptop?

    I'm clutching at straws now lol.

    Yep, I'm down to 3 drivers left to find and I have the disk for the graphics card except there are around 25 choices for the graphics card.

    - SM Bus Controller
    - Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
    - Video Controller (VGA) Compatible

    Are you loaded into windows?

    You might try start->all programs->accessories->system tools->system information

    Once in, Components->Display

    This shows the vid information, just trying to remember off hand if it shows this before the driver installation or not.

    Do you have net access on the notebook yet? If you do have you tried searching for a driver via windows update? The manufacturer of the notebooks website would probally also tell you as well.

    Are the choices you're getting from the have disk option, after searching your driver disk?

    Yes, I installed my dodgy windows copy so I could at least get started and then I'll install the Home edition when I can.

    Just going to try your suggestions now :)

    Unfortunately it's blank.

    I've tried looking for the model on the suppliers sites but all it says is 64MB Graphics. Helpful eh? lol

    I suppose I could always try every graphics controller until I find the right one. :)

    And to the anonymous red repping coward... why did this deserve a red rep?

    I offered a bit of advise. I'm not breaking the law.
