Google Adsense ads have been annoying me for a while. I changed the url of my website to devtrench.com about 4 months ago and I now I get ads about trench digging and trenchers. This is really annoying because my website is a blog about web development and I've never written anything about the subject of trenching. I guess I'm learning the hard way about how important a URL is, but I really like my domain and site and am not changing it. I finally took the ads down today because I think it probably is a barrier for this site taking off to see ads about trench diggers when the user is reading about web development. I'll turn the ads back on if someone can let me know how I can tell google to match the ads to my site better. Isn't this supposed to be contextual advertising and not just url matched advertising? Annoying. </rant> Anyway, suggestions about how to make the ads better, or another ad network that might be more suitable for my needs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, James
Maybe drop them a mail and remember you can ban any ads you dont like from showing on your site......
Add more keywords and meta tags related to your site and eventually you'll start seeing more targetted ads. Also, try section targetting. This should help quite a bit: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=23168
Hey, thanks for the info on section targeting, I didn't know you could do that. My posts do draw more relevant ads after they have been up for a while, it just annoys me that all new posts alway have an ad about trenching. Hope section targeting works. And thanks for the tip about "trench links" being a keyword, I might change that too
I didn't see any ads. Maybe you pulled them? The problem is that Google doesn't have much to go on when trying to figure out what your site is about. If it can't figure out what the site is about, it can't deliver relevant ads. Also it appears that your front page title and HTML title change with every new post. Every time Google looks at your site, it's about something different. What kind of ads do you want Google to deliver? How about writing an introductory paragraph or two that always appears at the top of the first page? Make sure it contains the keywords that you want to drive the ads that Adsense delivers.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'm implementing all of them and we'll see how it goes. I've added a sidebar ad back in to test how the section targeting works. Right now the ad has 'trench' ads in it, but I'll leave it up for a while to see how it goes.
Just an update - I contacted Google and they basically told me that their algorithm searches the content of the site, blah blah blah. Sounds like they don't care. Even with implementing all of the above strategies, I still get badly targeted ads. However, seems like individual posts have well targeted ads, and it is mostly just new posts and sadly the homepage that doesn't fair so well. I'll keep watching it for a while and see how it does, but I've been thinking about switching to something like Azoogle Ads to see how that does. Anyone want to compare Azoogle to Google? James
Section targeting would definitely help the situation. I'd also refrain from mentioning the domain name on the site. Maybe use an image instead when you wish to reference it.
Try building more links as well - and fix up your meta keywords, and description, so that it'll display better targetted ads.
Dev, just checked ur website and it seems the ads are now targetted? For your hosting article, i can see hosting ads. So it seems its now fixed. good luck and one more tip: Avoid title such as Links from the Trenches #4 What do you expect for a keywords in title to trigger? Fix that from now on and you should be fine.
Well, frankly speaking you have got much better now. And hope fully you are getting better day by day
Google really dont care, but you can block sites you deem inappropriate and it may help to place targetted keywords near the advert code itself whiel avoiding the word trench ie "One of the webs formost internet developer resources"
Now you know the importance of domain name choosing. The bad targeting can be a blessing though in a few cases.
Well, almost a year after posting this initially I can finally say that I haven't seen any trenching ads on the site for a while. I actually gave up on adsense for a while because it was so frustrating and got back to it because I figured making a few bucks was better than nothing. Now I'm glad to say that the site keeps doing better adsense wise (albeit still very low). I'm not really sure why the ads are better targeted now, but maybe google just knows my site better since I've stayed in the game longer. James
Sometimes It is difficult to google robot. I had face the same problem before but I think now they are concentrating on content as before ads were reflected as per domain and title
