Is there a point to asking this question? It is kind of like asking "What if there were no dictionaries? Would people still be able to talk to each other?"

directories would own the web if there were no search engines, people would still need to find info and directories would provide them.

I would definitely have started a directory anyway with or without a search engine, although I admit that it will take a LOT of work to drive traffic to my directory.

Search engines are directories, very advanced true, but thats what they are

When i started out by coding my own directory, i didn'y know about

    pagerank

    link text

    authority sites

or any off the many reason most start directories for nowadays

I dreamt of getting the man on the street to use my directory, and with the current Google situation,,,,,,,

We can have a search engine by directories!

If there were not search engines, far less people would use the internet. What use would hte internet be if you can't find anything your looking for?

To say a search engine is a directory is giving directories too much credit. Directories list submitted websites by categories determined by the web directory; search engines list all relevant indexed web site pages by the user's search term.

Imagine looking for a site on installing NOS in Sports and Recreation/Autos!

Directories are evolving, no one knows the future, but is it not significant that the major SE's ensure that they retain a directory within their visible assets?

Furthermore, inspite of all the ill informed commentary on this an other forums, all the search engines so far have clearly avoided saying anything detrimental to their relationship with the multiple thousands of directories in different strata around the internet.

We are all in the search market, it really is time for us to go out there n grab a share of the search market.

I would create one and give you all PAGERANK = 10 :)
Then create few of my own directories and give it PAGERANK = 15 :)
    Sounds fair ?

    Not possible!!!

It is in the nature of the internet to have search engines.

Same goes for directories as with many other things that will exists in the future. Time is the only obstacle for them to appear.

It's like saying why there is evil and good-- both need each other to exist. Without good there is no evil and the reverse is true.

That is a BIG "IF" ;)

If there would be no SE, then we might be in early age of Internet when there was no concept of PC. SE are there coz of natural evolution of Internet World.

So if we are discussing about it here, then certainly internet has made tis progress and there would certainly be some sort of Search Engine.

Now about the question part, well I guess then Directories will surely be more popular. Some big ones will have a lot of success and people will be actually searching on directories. (More traffic for listed sites, high price, more work for owner)

Whoever comes the first to be the first search engine after the death of all existing search engines would become very popular, possibly the next Google ;)
