I know some friends who use .tk domains; they are amatuers, but what do you guys think about the idea of using .tk domains, then expanding to a paid.tk or .com later?

    .tk just screams NEWBIE

With domains at 9 bucks you there really isn't any reason to use some .tk one

that is such a load of crap, besides I hate the word "NEWBIE", its so pathetic and geeky.

I believe .tk has its own place. I think if your a business trying to sell a product or a website that somehow profits from users (ads, affiliate programs)
then you need a propper domain and hosting.

However, if your just someone who wants a blog, or a fansite, why not use a .tk?

Agree with Fryman here. I'd never take a site seriously that had a Tokelau domain. I wouldn't buy anything from one and I wouldn't do a link exchange with one.

As long as you have zero commercial aspirations, .tk is fine.

    i say spend the $10.

.tk doesn't scream newbie per se in my book, as they have been around for over 8 years now - http://www.4114u.com/domains/whois-tk.html - but I do agree that it's not one I'd give a lot of thought too unless I was specifically looking for statistics, travel information or demographics for that region.

This is merely a country code specific top level domain for Tokelau. It may not be as "appealing" as a .com, but if you're from that country or New Zealand, you probably wouldn't think the same way.

There are several members here at Digital Point who have other ccTLD specific domains from Canada (.ca), United Kingdom (.gb and .uk), United States (.us) and others; I'm sure they are not under the impression that their domain extension sucks - it's probably either a matter of country pride, getting a domain name that they wanted (as the .com was already taken), simply showing they are a country-specific website, or a combination of any of the aforementioned.

    One man's trash is another's treasure ;)

Depends on your perspective, from a 10 year old's view, it just shortens the domain, which is a + only.

WTF? Most people in NZ couldn't even place Tokelau on a map and we know that crappy .tk domains are just that.

Full marks to the people of Tokelau though for trying to make their domain worth something.

Have you seen that Yahoo is selling domains for US$2.99? I got a good 4 letter .com domain. Why go for something dodgy?

If free they are a redirect, which might turn out to be tricky for some uses; if paid for they are not but why not buy cheap .coms?

Well of course most good .coms and others are taken, and that might be the real advantage of a .tk domain. Prob the only one, unless your name is Tom Knowles. :)

I agree with fryman, .tk or .cjb.net and stuff like that is pure newbie / 10 year old kid website.

I don't take those type of websites seriously, not even for link exchanges. Even for experiences I register a cheap .com or .net or .org... And a ccTLD like .pt, .co.uk or .es is something very very different from a .tk!

My point is, if you want to suceed and be taken seriously register a decent domain name.

    Also, avoid those www.this-is-my-list-of-keywords-for-my-crappy-website.com

I'm not saying they have high "real estate value" per se, but they may be of great "personal" value to some. I'm sure many people feel that .us are worthless, but many snatch them up for either getting a domain name that they couldn't as a .com or they simply wanted a "patriotic" domain.

I would be obverse to seeing a company called Tech Knowledge owning tk.tk - they'd probably think it's pretty cool?

well i don't think .tk is bad. I'm 15 years myself, so i'm not allowed to have a .com adress or something like that. and for redirecting sites, i think .tk is the best:). It's only when i'm 18 i'd agree with you guys

Get PayPal set up and register a domain. 15 is not that young anymore on the web. 10 year olds are becoming great webmasters, you should start early and get into having a domain. 10$ isn't a lot for a 15 year old either.
