Gmail Invites for UK?

Discussion in 'Legal Issues' started by concordancer, Oct 27, 2005.

Now that Google is required by law to offer its email services in UK as "Google Mail" and not "Gmail", this poses a rather interesting issue..

Does that mean that I cannot give out Gmail invites to people unless I make sure first that they are not from UK? And how do I do make sure - ask for passport? For a tax return? Phone bill? - wow, that's really stupid - we do not even ask for an email address to send an invite to. Any suggestions?

Their updated help at https://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en-GB/googlemail.html is not exactly helpful....

    Lol, no.

You can invite anyone, even people from the uk, but the ones from the UK will have @googlemail.com adress instead of a gmail.com adress.

why will you need to change the script?

If you send them an invite, google will do the job.

If sent by email, yes, Google will do it. If, however, an invite is "reprocessed" (i.e. anonimously donated and anonimously claimed) by a script at my site then the whole process is too random. Thus, those seeking Gmail invites may receive Google Mail invites that they presumably do not want... and vice versa.

.. Sorry if that sounds confusing but I am just trying to make things out myself - whichy is why I came here for guidance in the first place :)

    Good luck!

Just tell them, that they will get a @googlemail.com if they are located in the UK. It's exactly the same a gmail, you can login at mail.google.com, like everyone else, just the adress will be diffrent.

Not even that's different - emails sent to also arrive at present - for accounts created both before and after the change.

Seriously? I thought they said some other company claimed rights to the gmail name in the UK, therefore the adress would be diffrent.
