Hi all, In google, site:www.dvd-subtitles.com returns about 700 results. However site:dvd-subtitles.com (no www) returns over 10,800! Why is this? Does this mean it dvd-subtitles.com is better than www.dvd-subtitles.com? should I 301-redirect all my pages to http://dvd-subtitles.com from http://www.dvd-subtitles.com? Cheers, Mat
You should only use one and re-direct the other to the one you choose, this way you won't be penalised for duplicate content. I normally prefer to use the www version, however in your situation I'd be be tempted to stick with the non www version as that seems to be better indexed.
Do you think google is not bothering to index a lot of pages under www.dvd-subtitles.com, because there's duplicate content under dvd-subtitles.com?
Last night, I set up a 301 from the www URL to the non-www URL. In my .htaccess: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.dvd-subtitles\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://dvd-subtitles.com/$1 [R=301,L] This morning I tried "site:dvd-subtitles.com" in google, and I only get 895 results. Yesterday I was getting 10,800 results for "site:dvd-subtitles.com". What's happened? Mat
i think site:dvd-subtitles.com shows results also from www.dvd-subtitles.com thats why you had more results with site:dvd-subtitles.com i think it was better to redirect to www.
yeah, if you just do dvd-subtitles.com, it will do for all sites, including subdomains, under that domain.
that doesn't quite follow... yesterday: "site:dvd-subtitles.com" returned 10,800 results, "site:www.dvd-subtitles.com" returned 790 results. today: "site:dvd-subtitles.com" returns 895 reuslts, "site:www.dvd-subtitles.com" returns 744 results. surely as I now redirect all to dvd-subtitles.com, I should be getting the 10,800 results plus the 790 results for www.dvd-subtitles.com? Why should all my dvd-subtitles.com pages suddenly disappear off the index? Mat
You can't put up a redirect and expect Google to update its index by the next day. Give it some time, pick either the www or the no-www version, and stick to it. Give it some time, I did the same and it took almost 2 months for Google to start catching up.
after converting my URLS to a subdomain for my forum, instead of http://www.krazyletter.com/forums/ into http://forums.krazyletter.com/ Google still have some URL's indexed at the old URL. And I did that last november.
I wasn't expecting Google to update its index the next day - yet it seemed as though google DID update its index the next day - by dropping almost all my pages I do find your words reassuring though - thanks. Looks like I'll have to sweat and pray for a month or two Thanks, Mat
Redirecting should be standard procedure in the setup of any domain. Not good to be slapped for duplicate content because of your own domain / subdomain. DP
