What kind of keywords are we talking about ? A lot depends on the field, , nature of traffic to be targetted ,competition etc
Don't expect to last long if you're going to look for a silver bullet solution, because frankly it just doesn't exist. You'll be spending (read: wasting) your time chasing after every next trick in the book trying to keep your Web site in the top 10 (or 20) rather than building a sustainable Web site that will grow (and make you money) over the long term. There are plenty of threads with wonderful resources on SEO and on-site optimization here on Digital Point (especially the ones I've posted in). Why bother when you can do it yourself? It's not hard really. It just takes some time to learn the fundamentals, but with the right resources that can take what? A day or two (to learn them)?
How competitive is your keyword you want to optimize for example if you told me you wanted to optimize the keyword "search" and be listed on google.com for 1 year on the 1st page or first 20 results lets say my cost would be about $20,000. On the other hand if you wanted a word or key phrase as simple as " England Business Brokers" than that would be a different story.
There are lots of factors are important no one can give answers without knowing the keywords and its competition. it will be batter to post your domain and your keywords which help us to give best answers.
As the others have said you're really asking the same question as how long is a piece of string. However I usually advise clients that they should not expect any massive changes in under three months. Yes this may seem like a long time, and yes some keywords can be achieved in a much shorter time, but I think it is all about managing the clients expectations. Hope that helps a bit

Optimize the page with those keywords by placing on the title tag, meta tag and include those keywords on the body content, it helps you lot....!!!!
