Should i warn google ?

I'm expecting a huge increase in visitors, because of some news, it will very likely be slashdotted, should i warn google about the sudden increase in visitors that might happen ?

The ad impressions will be many more than usual, and maybe the clicks too.

 

last month I has a site that had about 100-200 users a day then added some news content and it jumped to 5-6k/day for about a week and I didn't have any problems.

 

I would make sure your site could handle the load first, if you're not on your own dedicated server or vps, you should let your host know about the traffic so they could allocate resources for your site.

For your question about adsense, there is no need to notify them.

I think it couldn't hurt. I read on another forum about a certain website getting a mention over the radio and their website received 10x the visitors with double the CTR. I think they were kicked out by Google.

If the above story is to be believed (and its not that far off from reality) I don't think it could hurt to let Google know, especially since you are aware of the possible jump. Also, it helps to build a trusting relationship with Google in case some other issue comes up in the future.

I know some site who being Slashdotted or Boingboinged before.

Absolutely! I did and they thanked me for it and sayed they would keep it on record for my account.....

 

Let them know, I know of a few instance when Google suspended accounts due to unusual high traffic. The accounts were later reinstated but revenue was still lost as no ads were showing when the traffic was at its peak.

Just keep your hands down and don't look guilty. If its a legitimate traffic increase, google won't care.

I know of 2 cases from members here that had their account suspended after large traffic surges, the accounts were re-instated afterwards. So still say it's best to be safe than sorry. I'd also say it's using my frickin head learning from somebodies else problem and minimizing the risk.

The cases I know of may be in the extreme but if I was expecting an extra 100K visitors overnight I'd do everything in my power to make the most of that opportunity.

 

It certainly doesn't hurt to email Google if you think you're going to get a traffic surge. You can bet that abnormal traffic sets off alarm bells. Sames goes if you're seeing much higher than normal CTR rates -- best to be proactive about it. Better to be presumed innocent than presumed guilty.

 

Ok, well I disagree. IMHO I think it pisses google people off. Can you imagine if all the advertisers emailed them to let them know they are not cheating.

I mean honestly. This is just shocking to me.

 

I'm not saying you should tell Google about every little bump in traffic you have. But if you have a significant increase that's expected, better to let them know in advance. Or even as it happens. Trust me, it works...
