I don't really understand how google could take over the world of search engines so quickly as google did. Can anyone explain to me how google could grab all users attemtion? I mean.. normal people ue the tools they always do if it's not something special and I use altavista still today and think it's in many ways better than google.. I get more relevant search results(especially in the photo search)
I think less is more, google is fast, easy, and uncluttered. I think MSN will be taking a stab at google soon though.
I remember when i started using Google. It was way before it became as widespread as it did. A friend recommended it and said it was such a clean and simple interface. He was correct, I enjoyed it and still use it today. They can't ban google in IE if Google becomes too big. I don't know how you processed that thought...then typed it...then clicked "Post." I also think its the plain simple and quick interface. Yahoo and MSN are not really search engines in my opinion they are portals. I know someone is going to disagree with that.
Ditto. There's not other stuff on the page that distracts you. On the current MSN, you can barely see the search box from everything else on the page. It's like search is a very minor thing on the page. That is changing, though, it seems. The beta MSN looks a lot like the Google style.
Yeah I remember back before google existed.. I used alta vista for 99% of my searching. Google's biggest initial appeal was it was just clean. Things had gotten super-cluttered back then (make modern day yahoo and msn look empty by comparison), and google's page was just an absolute shock in the other direction. It was just like an invitation. "here we are for you to search for stuff, and nothing else." Obviously they tricked everyone good.. The results ended up being useful so that is why it stuck.. but I think the initial attraction was totally the interface for a lot of people.
LOL I was thinking something along the same lines... Google leaped to the top because they offered something new: simple interface, fast search, large database. They came on the scene at a time when everyone else was building banner and advertisement heavy all-things-to-everyone portals with a search feature included. Google reversed that terend and gave searchers what they wanted. Theyc are now the gold standard, at least until someone improves on the model. They still have the largest index and the fastest and most relevant search engine, IMO.
Well technically I think they can. Anything is possible. But what would happen if they did? Google would make a browser and tons of people wouldnt use IE anymore. Not a very good move.
No but my wife says she often uses ask.com to find things now. So I decided to do a little un-scientific testing on ask.com and its OK, but not to the level of google. First off ask.com crawlers are slow and lots of data is obsolete. Pages are months old since last crawled on page one of results. Glenn
I would guess Microsoft is not in a position to block other search engines from their desktop. I think they learned that lesson once already.
If they did ban Google from IE (which would never happen), IE users would drop even more rapidly than they are now.
best move MSN can make is to make the current page and make it http://msn.com/crap and take this http://search.msn.com/ and make it msn.com (removing the blue boxed in look and really make the input field "THE FOCUS") of course, there are some major advertisers that would be pissed about that. ask the user what they want to see first ... then fill that need. at this stage, yahoo and msn's results are just as good or good enough, and after this update they may just be better ... they need to un-portal.
If G decides to continue with this type of results the general user will switch to a different engine. I have been using Y for my personal searches over the last few weeks.
If I had a penny for every time I've heard THAT over the past few years... I doubt very much that "the general user" has even noticed anything different... I can just see people rushing back to AltaVista for the "really good search results"...
