wrong! Dark Fibre is a term used by Telco's and it actually refers to fibres that are point to point and do not have any Amplifiers or line transmission equipemnt on them, hence they are dark and not lit until they are plugged into a terminal equipment which might be a server or switch.

500,000 servers is a lot of hardware to keep running! Where I work we have enough trouble keeping 150 running properly!

The mind boggles at how you could effectively manage the data and keep it all intact!

Google doesn't disclose the number of servers it has, or the number of physical data centers, other than saying it has "dozens" of data centers. Google considers these details proprietary, since its data center operations are seen as a key competitive differentiator with Microsoft, Yahoo and other competitors.

The estimate of 450,000 servers is about a year old ... no way to know if it's accurate. Google has been busy building more huge data centers. The company has announced four new data center projects this year (in North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Iowa), each of which carries an investment of approximately $600 million.

I'd like to order all of Google's servers please. Yes, place them in my backyard, the rain will cool them..

Google indeed has an extensive amount of resources available to them, hats off to them, for their success.

Rather than talking abt individual servers, think of server clusters, connected through main gateway server in every array of a datacenter.
There was much info abt that on a Readers digest article i read years before.
