Hi there. I'v just started a new website and apart from unique content which i am putting on the site i also want to know if i can use RSS feeds? Isnt it just like stealing content? I have seen many sites using it. Also will it harm my site badly due to the fact that it is duplicate content?
I've seen many many people doing this but I can't say whether it is legal or not because I'm no expert on this field. I think if someone allows RSS feed on his website it's legal for you to pick it up and display it on your website as long as you don't don't make any changes whatsoever, give all credits to the author (name, link...) and don't charge for the content. Notifying the author would be appropriate also. I've seen a lot of blogs using RSS feeds as content from other blogs and websites which don't forbid distribution of articles (for example Woopidoo has a line after every article: This article by David Bond may not be reproduced online in part or whole. Copyright © Woopidoo.com. But ofcourse they don't have the RSS feed feature. I'm just saying watch out for warnings.
Aol video, Yahoo video and Google video are using rss syndicated content from everywhere on the internet. Enough said?
Actually, RSS feeds are copyrighted just like any other text, so if you want to include them in your Web pages as static content, you will have to ask for permission to do so. Otherwise you're stealing the content, which in legalese is referred to as copyright infringement.
Listen... The concept of RSS is syndication, and as such I'm pretty sure the Syndicator would not have a problem with you using that RSS feed; In the event they do... you have "Fair Use" as your defense. Just a thought...
Most of the time that syndication is for personal use only, not reproduction on other Web sites. Which is why I said to check with the terms of service and ask for permission just to be on the safe side. Honestly, how much trouble is it just to ask someone for permission?
Okay Dan, that's fair. One question, if you don't mind? Why would I want to use my own RSS and what would I use it for? I syndicate for others to use... Hmmm...
If it's your own feed, do with it what you want. That's the great thing about it being yours to begin with. YOU get to tell others what they can and cannot do with it.
It is just bad karma, and yes, it does not curry favor with Google, who marks such websites down for duplicate content.

How would one go about doing that on their site ? I would love to have something that took RSS stories and automatically inserted them in as articles in my site.
One way would be... Install a CMS like Joomla and add a RSS syndication component. You'd be able to create a news site, just like that (well, almost).
