If your site using dedicated ip you have to just write the ip address in the explorer. If you are using cpanel based shared ip you have to write something like

    http://your ip/~username
    PHP:
If you are using fast dns server it should be updated within a hour.

site.com/~username only works if the site is setup to support that method.

Since you are probably using virtualhosts, there is really no way to access it by IP directly, since you have to pass the hostname in the request, for instance :

    GET / HTTP/1.1
    site: www.site.com
    Code (markup):
(think that's right... close anyway) This way many sites can share an IP.

BUT, if you set your DNS, on your local machine, to your host's DNS, then they have a static entry for you, and you can view your site immediately, before DNS propagates to your local machine's ISP's DNS.

So if I am hosted by awesomehosting.com, I simply ping ns1.awesomehosting.com, get that IP, and put it in my local machine as my primary DNS server.

You'll want to change that back after you are done, or you may not be able to resolve anything but the sites hosted on your host (people don't allow recursive DNS much anymore.)
