Life after 301 redirect

Discussion in 'Google' started by zaui, Jul 17, 2007.

    Hi,

I've recently had to do a 301 redirect on my whole site. Googlebot was happy to reindex and update the search results with the new url in about 5 days (PR4 site), 2,700 pages indexed.

However, was wondering if anyone knows how I should build links or what to do with existing link exchanges?

Should i start moving over as many backlinks as I can to the new domain? Or should I just leave everything as is and just start getting links to the new domain?

Or lastly should I keep getting links for the old domain name?

    Confused,

Now built backlinks for your new domain. 301 is used to transfer all the benefits of old domain to new one. so ur old link popularity will be transfered to new one. Now buit link for the new domain.

Start building new links, although I'd move important exchanges as well...it's not about the engines only, depending on the tools people use to check if their links are still on your site, you may lose trades because they think you pulled their link.

Same can happen with directories that use spiders to check their database. It's best to update the links that you can IMO.

I have a question related to this thread. I am in the process of doing the samething, however the site I am redirecting is a real estate related to another city than its being redirected to.

Pertaining to the BLs the old site has will it affect the site its being 301d to which is a totally different city?

If your old BLs use anchor text for the previous city, then yes, they could end up making the new site rank well for the old city name.

Will they have any value at all for the new site even though the anchor text used for the old site isnt what the anchor text would be for the new one?

IE: the old anchor text had city plus real estate...homes...condos and so on. The new site will have anchor text different city plus real estate ...homes and condos and so on

Yeah keep transferring your BL's from previous site, get new backlinks, and perform SEO on the new domain.

Or lastly should I keep getting links for the old domain name?
    Code (markup):
i did it 2 years ago: 301 redirect
    still:
i got traffic from old domain
in google can find 2-3 pages from old domain (don't understand why)
yahoo and other SE still keep in their index 2-10k pages from old domain (had PR 5-6)

and ... if u have chance to change backlinks to your previous domain -> to new domain, pls do it .

there is no difference before 301 redirect and after the 301 redirect.

if you make 301 redirect , all big search engines understands that your site has been moved the new adress

and keep both urls in their database?

    is yahoo/google one of them?

as i know, after 301 redirect SE view only last url, but not url which redirect.
