Managed Hosting?

The current host we are using is a joke (site5.com). Our sites have been down more and more frequently and now, they've been down for 3 hours today. Awesome!

Does anyone know how much basic managed hosting on a dedicated server costs? $100's a month? $1000's a month? I've tried searching the internet, but every managed host I've come across has those cryptic "let us give you a quote" forms.

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced managed hosting solution?!

You could easily find a lot of reviews, offers and info at the WHT forums.

    I've heard managemybox.com is good.

Thanks for the recommendations :). I just wish I had more time to learn about servers+server admin so I knew exactly what we need...

I'm going to check deeper into managemybox.com. :) Thanks again.

Get a dedicated server from SoftLayer and buy management from ManageMyBox, if you dont need management, and if you get into any trouble, SoftLayer solves your problems for $3/instance.

I've worked with SoftLayer myself. First of all, for the high powered servers you get, they undercut everyone. Secondly, if there's a problem on SoftLayers side, it's no cost. I never paid for any of my support tickets, because they were all covered under their no-cost support requests.

As far as unmanaged dedicated servers go, SoftLayer has my repeat business and recommendation for great service, and price/performance ratio. I've never used ManageMyBox (or any managed server company) so I can't really comment on them.

Do not try with softlayer...very slow network...good harware doesn't mean good server. It must need strong network. Softlayer network is very poor.

i second on managemybox , I have used it and so far it's pretty reliable and i could tell that Nick, the guy behind can give you support fast and reliable. Go for it for money saving as well.

bouncer69, when u say strong network, how can one find out if the network they are in is fast?

It is not difficult to find out. First you have to check their bandwidth provider and total network speed. Second you have to check test download from a 100Mbit server. Third you have to check some website already hosted there.

For example : They have one 100Mbit test download file which no more that connected with 5 Mbit server cause it is downloading 455 kbps only. I have few dedi box from other company all of them downloading no less than 5000 Kbps.

I agree that good hardware doesn't mean a good connection. However, SoftLayer just threw down a couple million dollars to get better backbone connections. My experience with their network connectivity was fine, and I was pumping 200GB+/month through their network. I'm not sure how long ago you used them, and as I understand, the upgrades to their backbone connections was fairly recent.

Checkout their network diagram here: http://www.softlayer.com/downloads/SoftLayer_Network.pdf

    bouncer69,
No offense but maybe the problem is on your end....consider downloading the file on a different computer, on a different network, connected to a different ISP and then report back here. I'm downloading at the max speed of my connection which is much higher than 455kbps.
