Proof Google Looks at Whois

I did a search for my name today in Google, and a website of mine was returned in the results! This website has absolutely no mention of my name anywhere on the site or in the coding. I usually get private registration on my domains, but since this is a .ca domain I can't do it and my info is displayed in the whois. Just food for thought!

Matt Cutts pretty much acknowledged that they examine whois data at Pubcon 2006, while talking about private whois data. During the site review session he noticed that a bunch of domains some guy owned all had private whois data, and suggested that this could factor into Google's algo or a penalty of some sort.

After getting back from Pubcon I did a post about how private whois data might hurt you here. There's a quote from Senor Cutts that's very relevant.

I think the big thing here is it showed up in search results... Not that they might use that data in ranking sites.

While the whois data is available to the general public, associating a name with a site in a search query with nothing but the whois to go by is scary...

I was wondering about this recently. I guess that is would be harmful to cross link two sites then, bugger.

I suspected G checks whois, but the issue is do they do so to influence on rankings?

For example, supposedly different class C IP links are believed to be totally different unique links, so you can safely cross link to one another. But since G knows who owns which websites, is there any point having class C IP's?

Google look whois for sure, but class c ip is still important. Anyway if you can register with the privacy, I think you should

I don't believe this, I mean it's plausible that G checks whois, but returning results based on whois without other reference ?
There must be a link to your domain with your name in anchor or nearby.

I currently privacy protect all new domains I register. I never did before and changed because of G.

I believe that once pegged as an 'internet marketer' (as opposed to an end merchant) or whatever gradients of distinction in between G makes, they run a higher level of scrutinizing algo on your sites.

I have many domains on the same system and the only ones that have been banned by google are the ones in my name - none of the privately registered ones have been banned yet, but we'll see.

Yes, they can make correlations using ips, registrars, google analytics(if mounted), adsense ids etc. to discern quasi ownership. But I think that's at the next level.

I have heard that they use a "whois" information soley for the domain age and lenght of registration.

Is somebody as serious who buys 10 years in advance on a .com domain, vs somebody who bought a 1 year 88c .info?
