Hello, i recently redid my website and i want to launch it, the last website was in a directory called /main/ i wish to get rid of the directory /main/ and just have mysite.com/index.php

so i want to take mysite.com/dir/index.php and change it to mysite.com/index.php

    is this a bad idea?

    thank you.

Hi providing that your directory has good links going to it then each search engine that it's listed within should detect the new changes when they next crawl your website, so I would doubt if it will do any harm at all and it may get slightly better results if it's easier to index by the webspiders that visit it.
Send me a PM and let me know your domain name and I will test it out by crawling your website into my New Zealand based search engine.

Could you tell us why you'd like to remove the folder name? If it's ranking well I'd rather keep it that way... and removing the /main/ folder could be a bad idea.

I would change it and 301 redirect the old URL to the .com and completely do away with the index.php extension.

it does not change anythink but there are two important thinks.

    * dont forget to give a link to your home page
    * use 301 redirect while you are changing

    Ditto on this.

Then resubmit the site to the major SEs so they'll update their index with your new site architecture.

    Good luck!

Just follow what trichnosis has said, it would be better to change IMO.

use the 301 but If it is ranking well I don't see why you should change it
