PR5 - WootAgent.com - Very Popular Software Tracker Site for Woot.com

Discussion in 'Sites' started by carlo2343, Jul 9, 2007.

    Starting Price: $500
    BIN: $1800

    Site: http://www.wootagent.com
    Age: 5 1/2 months
    Page Rank: 5
Income: Minimal but great potential ($200)
Income Sources: Adbrite, Adsense, AuctionAds, Bidvertiser, Chitika, Kontera, ReviewMe
Expenses: $15/month hosting. No money ever spent on advertising.
Why Am I selling: I am heading back to college and need a little extra cash to start off this next semester. Running wootagent has been a hell of alot of fun, especially during the Woot-Offs when you get to chat and respond to hundreds of emails from your users.
Average time to run site per week: 1-2 hours

WootAgent is a program designed for the Windows users in the Woot community (Mac users will hopefully get one in the near future) who want a quick and helpful reminder when a new product is available on www.woot.com, or when there is a Woot-off. On top of the desktop application, WootAgent also offers an IM service, an SMS service, and a web based service. The site also has a blog where I make updates about things happening in the woot community or with the program. The software has been downloaded over 10,000 times.

Woot.com also has something called 'Woot-Offs'. This is basically when people go crazy and the site numbers skyrocket. In Woot-Off mode, a new product is launched immediately after the sellout of the previous deal. There is a half-Woot-life of 12 hours maximum on any product within a Woot-Off that does not sell out. A Woot-Off usually lasts 48 hours.

    Traffic:
    Feb-Jul Traffic
March Traffic (Woot-Off took place 22nd-24th)
April Traffic (Woot-Off took place 26nd-27th)
    All-Time Referrals

WootAgent basically runs off of the Woot-Offs. During regular Woot days, WootAgent's traffic is low. I look at it like this: You prepare and monetize for the Woot-Off, and once it is over, you have a few weeks to fix bugs, prepare some more and monetize some more before the next big wave of visits.

I did run an adwords campaign for WootAgent (I received a free adwords $50 GC for signing up on some site a while back so I put it to use). The campaign did quite well and my #1 referrer was from the woot homepage for a while.

Traffic has dropped in the past few months because I haven't had time to keep WootAgent on everyone's minds. Contacting bloggers was my main source of traffic for the first few months, but I'm sure a paid campaign on some sites will make traffic skyrocket.

When I launched WootAgent I contacted large technology blogs and was able to get WootAgent posted up on these blogs. Here are a few places WootAgent has been talked about (including link to articles):

    LifeHacker

WootAgent made the digg front page

    DownloadSquad

    TechCrunch

    Woot!

    JohnChow

    StopGeek

    Revenue:
    Adbrite
    Adsense Content - Adsense Referrals
    AuctionAds
    Bidvertiser
    Chitika
    Kontera
    ReviewMe

The site wasn't truly monetized until the beginning of May, which is when I started to see more revenue flow in. The site also received $50 in donations which brings the total of revenue to about $200.

    What you get:
WootAgent site with application, blog, IM service, SMS service w/ user list, web serivce. You also obtain full rights to do whatever you want with the services WootAgent offers (charge, etc). You will also receive the applications that send the IM's and SMS' to users about each new product that is available on Woot.

    The Future:
I am working with the current coder on WootAgent 2.0, which fixes up alot of the bugs and ads in more functions. Since I'm in the middle of selling the site, you can feel more than welcome to help the coder debug 2.0 and add in any new features you'd like. WootAgent 1.0 is still available for download on the website, but has just a few small bugs that were not fixed.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask them here or PM me.

It seems not many who downloaded the v1 is using the product now based on the current traffic stats, am I right?

Is the coder to be paid by you or the new owner?
    When will the coding finish?
Is there a feature so that the existing user be alerted to auto update to the new version?

Traffic stats are only related to the website -- there was no way for us to track if people are currently using the program or not unless we put some kind of tracker in, which would be considered spy ware. I would say a great deal of people use the tracker still, especially during Woot-Offs.

Coder will be paid by me only for what he is doing currently. If you want changes made to V2 then you must consult w/ him after it is completed.

The application is done it is just being debugged and fixed for any errors. I would say another 2 weeks and it should be ready to go.

Yes, a feature is in place so that the existing users will be alerted that a new update is available.

    1. How do you make money on downloaded software, if users do not need to access your website once they have the software on the PC?

    2. Can you comment on the feature for v2, as compared to say Wootsnoop?
(I saw this product who hijacked your digg thread.)

    1) The site makes money because it offers more than just downloaded software. It offers a web-based tracker that people can use that has ads on it. Also, when a newer version is available, users will have to come to the website to upgrade.

    2) WootSnoop has been trying to get us since the beginning. Everywhere we post, they post, but hey that's just competition for ya. They started before us, but my program got more publicity because it was more user friendly and well constructed. Version 2 will have most of the same features as version 1, except it will be quicker, with a new design, upgraded and fixed sound options, and more price comparison sites.
