Well i dont think it matters the number as much as the quality. If you have 1,000 links from pr1 sites thrn I cant see you going higher. If you have some real nice backliinks from pr6 or 7 sites then you are in good shape.

I bought a dropped domain that was a PR3 and it only had one site linking to it, a quality PR5.

I have since built 113 links ranging from PR0-PR4 and it is predicted to be a PR4 site with the new update.
So who knows how they figure it.

I would suggest quality instead of quantity. Please note that pr does not guarantee web traffic because SERP and page rank is a totally different story.

You never know. Because in the last update most of my PR5s have become PR4s, and PR 6s have become PR5.

Looks like the competetion is getting hotter and it is harder to get a good PR.

Since my old PR5s have become PR4, I can say how I achieved pr5 in those.

PR6 is a different matter altogether, but PR 4 should be piece of cake.

I had 8-9 links from 2 different PR 6 sites, and lots of PR 3 links (about 30).

Thanks for all your answers, though I wasn't able to get a concrete answer. But by the looks of it, it seems that it varies.

Just need to know, if I would have 1000 sites that have a PR greater then 3 linking to single site, would that single site hit a PR4 next update?

populartemplate, I think that it is not a good idea to think in terms of PR, backlinks number, etc.

Actually, you are getting sales not from the whole traffic, but from certain keywords. Actually, I think the better idea is to learn what keywords brings you better traffic (with higher conversion).

Once, found these keywords you could purchase 2-3 PR3-PR4 links and get in top 10 is search engines results for this keyword.

In this way rather than fighting the whole market you will focus on a tight niche - it is easier to fight, you need lower budget, you will win faster.
