    Peoples buy signatures for backlinks
This will help them to get high PR.

Peoples buy Avatar for promotion as they can't give backlinks :p
Signature sell at higher price then avatar.

As dark said both are bought for marketing of your website, mostly people buy avatar for promotion of there new website and signature people usually buy to get backlinks to increase page rank and traffic too.

They do it because there is an off chance someone will start a thread giving a free one way link :D

Product recognition, branding, exposure... links, traffic, PR, SEO in general...

Of course the sellers just need the money, trust me, I know. *sells sig*

It is all about exposure! If you want your site(s) know to others, siganture and avators can play a vital role.

In your case you knew about http://www.submitedge.com through other peoples avators. That is the whole purpose of avator advertising. ;)

Avatar can act like an advertisement board that we often find in big cities. It draws someone's attention and hence acts as traffic promoter. But I don't think it would increase backlink.

Avatar is basically bought for branding purpose and sig links are bought for traffic.

Interestingly there are a number of forums where less enlightened folk frequent, which 'flame you out' for signature link advertising, let alone avatar ads. The 'Forum Culture' here at DP is the best I've ever come across.

    Consider them Forum Billboards.

You can't buy something or visit a billboard, but you'll likely see it as you drive by, (or in the case of forums scroll by). Then when you go "5 miles and turn left" you just may end up picking the business that had the billboard a ways back.

It's nothing other product recognition, in hopes that when you clicking sig links you'll pick the one that matches the avatars you've been seeing.

They are advertising tools which has become almost indispensible in the current context.
