Does reporting abuse really do anything?

    There are two sites that are above me in the SERPS that have a dozen of links coming to them from the same spammy site (these are the only links they have btw). That's probably the reason they're ranking better, because my page rank is higher.

    This site's cached page shows the links and has some content and is probably what spiders follow. The page I see when visiting the site contains only excessive advertising and no content. The source code however is the same in the cached and the uncached version. There's an encrypted java script that probably does the redirects. So, simply put, this site shows different content to the bots than it does to the visitors.

    I went ahead and submitted this abuse to Google. Do you think they'll do anything about it?

    Losing to some real site would be fine. But I cannot swallow being outclassed by spam.

    Google has been known to get rid of the spammy sites from report forms, but that is not very often - usually these reports are used to help Google look at the most common types of spam out there, including javascript redirects.

    BTW, this is the js:

    <script language="javascript">
    <!--
    RZ = {
    map: null,

    convert: function(a) {
    RZ.init();

    var s = "";
    for (i=0; i < a.length; i++) {
    var b = a.charAt(i);
    s += ((b>='A' && b<='Z') || (b>='a' && b<='z') ? RZ.map : b);
    }
    return s;
    },

    init: function() {
    if (RZ.map != null)
    return;

    var map = new Array();
    var s = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz";

    for (i=0; i<s.length; i++)
    map[s.charAt(i)] = s.charAt((i+13)%26);
    for (i=0; i<s.length; i++)
    map[s.charAt(i).toUpperCase()] = s.charAt((i+13)%26).toUpperCase();

    RZ.map = map;
    },

    write: function(a) {
    document.write(RZ.convert(a));
    }
    }
    RZ.write('<senzrfrg ebjf="*,0" senzrobeqre="AB" obeqre="0" senzrfcnpvat="0" baYbnq="" baHaybnq="">\
    <senzr anzr="gbcSenzr" fpebyyvat="nhgb" fep="uggc://jjj.argfpenjyf.pbz/sj.cuc?qbznva=100fraffhef.dp.pn&xrljbeq=arbcrgf">\
    </senzrfrg>');
    //-->
    </script>

    What's this kind of cr@p?

    That code in the last write function looks like one of those cryptography games you can find in the newspaper where, as an example, a = j and you have to replace all the j's with a's to figure out what the message is.

    In this case, you can try and figure out the url by knowing that w = j etc.

    But what that code does? No clue. Not sure what the map function does.

    Looks like its the letter in the code, then go back 13 places in the alphabet to get the real letter.

    Reporting abuse has worked well for me so far. Takes them a couple of days, sometimes a week, but it has worked so far.

    If it doesn't, get a few friends to send in a complaint also from a different ip and email address. The more complaints the better.

    Dominic, they must like you. I have reported some spam, but no action. And they were pretty obvious. How about this one:

    w-w-w-.h-a-r-d-r-o-c-k---b-a-l-i-.c-o-m-

    Still there.
