if paid links could really damage your ranking, then competitors will be happy to buy you hundred of good paid links , and they will make sure the links will appear just under "sponsored links" who can stop them ? nooo... once gain "links will never hurt your ranking, its impossible"

That's why it's important for Google to not penalize for that. It IS useful for Google to ignore paid links, but they can't catch them all.

Now all these people with directories are very biased in whatever "help" they will give here, so bear that in mind. Many directories may still help you in SERPs, but could become useless in the future. That's why I suggest people not PAY for permanent links.

Now if you don't pay for links, then you will be more likely to spam. Spam is a big problem too, but patience is the only alternative to the two.

Now here's the broken record part:

Paying for links that pass PR is NOT the same as buying advertising in javascript or with nofollow. Please stop lumping the 2 together.

I think that's exactly what would happen if you buy loads of links (even better if they're sitewide, in porn or gambling or drugs sites) to a NEW COMPETITOR of yours; the few legitimate links he might get would be lost among the paid links; the paid links would keep the new competitors out of rankings for some time.

Now, you can't do the same to CNN or Harvard or any other well established sites. They have tons of legitimate links and years of well-behaving Historic, which already made them a trusted site. If you buy paid links to them, you would be helping them, because then it would the bad links which would get lost among the good links.

Each site has a different profile. Paid links affects each site differently.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

If you have a reputed site -earning millions of $$$ through it --and you are my competitor --and I can't beat you in SERPs- YOU MUST BE AFRAID.

Because I'll have $50 K --budget and list you on all available web directories and other sites ( even Porno & Gambling) and damage your SERPs and whatever you have online with Google.

Don't you just get it Paid Link Opposers?

Matt Cuts clearly mentions about this scenario on his BLOG.
Please do not misguide people -- as in such SCENARIO -Google clearly have well defined policies--of not harming sites on its existing SERPs.

I think after I read all opinions I can say I will continue to buy links on directories. Of course, not many (low budget ;) )
    Thank you all.

Heres an article about harming your competitor with 'artificial links'
    http://www.forbes.com/2007/06/28/negative-search-google-tech-ebiz-cx_ag_0628seo.html

"frame certain competitors as cheaters by posting thousands of links around the Web, making a competing site look like it's engaging in "link spamming," a tactic that draws the disfavor of major search engines. In SEO circles, this technique of setting up a competitor to be punished for link spamming is sometimes called "Google bowling."
