I think you need to be a certain sort of person to be a good SEO. Try it and see how it goes. Best thing is you can learn while doing it and even hold a full time job.

I would say no its not a good career. It's one of the easier ways to make money if you are good. But long term stability is very very iffy.

    SEO is a great job.

    However, there are some downsides:
    * having to constantly think about client's sites and how you can improve what you can do
    * constantly changing SEs mean that your skills must constantly be updated
    * in the US at least the marketing is packed (everyone wants to be an SEO!)

    Upsides:
    * in my experience the more money you charge a client, the more trusting they are of you! :p
    * highly rewarding
    * sounds good when you say you're an "internet marketing consultant" :p

I think SEO is the ultimate side job, something you can use to grow wealth on the side until it gets to a point that you no longer need the day job. Beats watching TV on your spare time.

I work full time for a financial services company doing (inhouse) SEO. I also do freelance SEO / SEM and I love it. For some reason I live and breathe it. I wake up HAPPY AND EXCITED to go to work everyday, so in my eyes, it's not a good career - it's the BEST CAREER.

If you are any good at seo, you don't need to work for anyone. I think you will make the most money working on your won sites and projects.

I agree - partially. I do freelance and my own websites for that reason, but I work for a company doing in house SEO for job security. I also get paid a FIXED wage - so if G goes down, tweaks its engine, etc - I still get paid. There is also the security that if SEO "fades out" there will be other places in our internet marketing team where I can work. Also, by working for a company, I interact with: affiliate managers, paid search / sem managers, multivariate / metrics experts, copy / writers, etc - so I can get a broader scope. Also, big companies have big money and they aren't afraid to use it. If I have an idea I can take some money and try it out. No risk on my part. On top of all that, I work for the GREATEST company in the world (it's in Fortunes top 100 places to work). It didnt beat Google, but it's pretty damn close!

SEO is a very good profession but it's also challenging. If you are cofident enough to do well in SEO then it would be a great profession for you.

a "serious" SEO service.. (whatever that is)...go on xxxxx.com (sorry, i really forgot what the url was..some big SEO company) and read..they charge 10.000 (!!!!) for their service. Sorry...thats just ridiculous !

There is only THAT MUCH you can do...on-site, off-site, links, blackhat, whitehat whatever....but 10.000/month !??!?! So...if they actually HAVE a bunch of clients shoving over 10 grand..then i assume its a profitbale market !

Anyway...no question SEO has future since more and more people and businesses get on the web...and they need our help !

$10000 a month for really big firm for marketing is nothing. Absolutely nothing. What they pay fot TV, newspaper, etc. ads costs lot more.

I think I know what company that is too. But as SEOLinker said, 10 grand is nothing to spend with these big companies. Its just what they charge. There are only really a few good people that actually know what they are doing online and can bring quality results, the others just use the title to make money then run from clients. I started to only work with small businesses because they appreciate the work and I can dominate that niche in my area, very easy to do!
