The title of the thread was really interesting at first sight, but after a few posts i realized it was a bit serious topic to debate on!

At first look i thought it was Cheapest=the most pathetic designer;) lolz!

anyways every designer is worth cos he comes out with something different atleast, and the rest "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder"

Lol by the way buying script is not part of job description for phpld template coder, and neither is design part, i provide only with coding services thats all, but it mod installations, or psd to directory conversion. Lol come on imteaz u want to hire for $100 come up with design, buy script for you and also add mod :) Nice try. Maybe someone else might do it though, so keep an eye on ur inbox though.

Don't go very cheap on template coding. It is a hard job, and deserve more value.
XHTML stuff, CSS stuff, browser compatibility, screen compatibility, fixed/fluid design, tableless, etc. It is nightmare job :)
For me, it is easier doing mods than template coding.

Well I normally code phpLD templates for 75$ for phpLD 3 versions.
If u want it coded for all versions then 150$.

If u want phpLD + WP theme from same psd then 150$.

    Only WP themes for 60$.

All routine norms and specifications followed and turn around time is 1-2 days.

However the rates may reduce or increase depending on the complexity of work.

Now I dont know if these rates are high or low so lets see how ppl comment about it in the posts that follow. ;)

A few offshoot questions to those of you coding and selling templates...

Do you offer the templates "as-is" for that one version only?

How do you handle when a new release comes out and your past customers come back to be updated?

Do you also offer to migrate databases when your customer changes scripts or the update calls for it?

While not part of the original question - all 3 relate to the cost of having custom templates.

well this topic is turning into a big debate whether cheap is always the best or always the crap.

    Beeeeeep the answer is neither.

It really depends on what the person is looking for. If you want a directory with some features and as long as it works ... than it can be done cheap. (is it good and/or beautiful) - Answer is different as "Beauty lies upon the eyes of the beholder"

Next... overcharging / expensive doesn't mean that you will always get the best quality from them. They might charge 2000 or w.e amount.... doesn't mean they are the best one.

There always are people with 300 - 400 doing a good job...

Now you define what is cheap ...

To people who are used to of paying $2000 >> $400 is cheap

and for people who u are used to of paying $15 >> $400 is expensive

so this question really have no answer !!! as the answer varies from people to people and there are too many people here at DP :p

i have seen coders / designers here doing an awesome job ... some may have charged their client $80 and some might have charged $800

so its not the money ... look at their previous work ... if you like their taste and it matches your taste of designs ... go with them ... it should never be about the money ... it should be about what you like !!

Like Marko, I dont take coding jobs myself either. I only start the design from scratch with my psd and than code it. No i am not as good as him :p because he can code complete divs <<

which basically means a whole new main.tpl ... because every other coder who claim a site is coded in divs ... all the files are .. but main.tpl default contains tables and to remove them u hav to do serious editing :p

I did do some jobs in the past and charged around $75 - $100 for a template .. and my price goes up for coding as the complexity of the design increases.... because its a fact that some designs are easier to code than others..

For me cheap = bad, but not always. Sometimes you will find very good coder for very low price :)
