Hi All, I'm new to the whole web thing and my first site has just gone live. I've been frantically sending the url to any directory I could find and any free submission services. It has just occurred to me that the free ones may have submitted to DMOZ, which I have already done. Is this likely? I understand they don't like multiple submissions and can block you for it! Is this true, and if so is there anything I can do to find out if this has happened, and can I change it if it has. would a suitably sucking up email help ? Thanks, Steve
Free (automatic) URL submissions normally go to search engines not directories. If you are putting out some money and getting to someone to submit your URL I doubt they will submit to DMOZ. If you submit more than once to DMOZ I believe that your application just gets pushed further down the no doubt massive list for the cat so you do more harm by submitting more than once. edit; you have around a 99% chance a suck-up e-mail will be deleted and not answered.
Steve, using free submission services is often a problem - and can get you (and your site) a bad name out there. Much better is to do the research yourself and be careful where you submit. As for the ODP submission, it very much depends on how often and widespread the submissions were. It's very much editor discretion, though, which can be quite hit-or-miss. My advice would be to take the time to find the right category in the ODP and submit yourself, once, there. Emailing editors probably won't do too much good, as there is no internal way to find out all the places something has been submitted. Editors will find the submissions one at a time.
I also was impatient and submitted my site for 5 times to dmoz. I still don't have any answers. Once i applied for editor and in evening i got the message that it was rejected. Then again i applied for it. Did'nt got any message. Still waiting for another refusal.

Minstrel, shame on you! How many times in the past have we had the discussion about the difference between submissions (once per site) and listings (editor discretion) and yet it appears that you still try to confuse the two for the sake of discussion. You usually make some excellent points about the ODP and its shortcomings - using arguments like this doesn't become you.

We've had this discussion before. The wording of the DMOZ policy implies that sites cannot be listed in multiple categories. Obviously, that's incorrect, but the fact that the statements implies to webmasters that multiple istings are against DMOZ rules is one of the factors that gives rise to all those cries of "corruption!".
Could you please point us to the text in our guidelines that gave you this false impression. We will have to change that text if what you say is true.

Not again that same old question. It has already been answered many time. Probably your ideas of what a site is aren't the same as DMOZ ideas about what it is. For DMOZ there isn't a 1 on 1 relation between domain and site. In some circumstances 1 site spans several domains, somtimes one domain can hold many sites. As we will list sites it is possible to see the same domain listed many times. In adult it seems to be very common to have several sites on 1 domain.
Show me where. I've asked that question many times on different forums and I have NEVER seen a reply that actually addressed the question.
