It is best to use a service, even if you have to pay for it. Reason being if you try to host your list on your own server you run the risk of having your mail and everything blacklisted.

It is better to pay for a service that knows how to handle that and keep you in the clear.

Great tip that P.S. thing - I definitely need to start adding that as well.

I'm familiar with newsletters, which I write "occasionally" (like once per month), but I have little experience with lists. I assume Aweber (and similar) are basically systems where somebody joins your list, and he will automatically get 5-7 (or whatever you want to send them) pre-written emails from you? (Where you sell them stuff).

In a nutshell... is this the way it goes?

And... a newbie thing: I presume after those 5-7 emails - you start sending new emails now and then to those subscribers or what?

Yes that is the basic jist of it. But when you are able to make it so that you are recommending something to your subscribers rather than trying to sell them something. That is when you will see results.

Think of it this way, what you are trying to do is build a relations ship with them, because we know that we naturally buy from those who we know.

We will take recommendations from people we know. That should be your goal, offer them advice, tips, tricks, and put a personal touch in there. For instance to the members of my traffic exchange I sent out an email about going to see the Transformers movie and how I was excited, I later went on to say that there is this great deal I have to offer, but I will be changing the price after I get back from seeing the movie.

So I still made a pitch but I put a personal touch and tried to connect and relate to my reader. I ended up getting lots of replies and a few sales from that letter. Even though some of the people responded didn't buy, the fact is they related to me, and that will help when I send out the next mail, and so on.

Well, yes - relationships are very important (have been doing that for years now ;)). It was just the fact that the "tactical level" (how to use mailing lists) was not familiar to me in this type of selling. I've used my blog for the same and newsletter to recommend products and remind people about my site.

Just wanted to know basics of list building (oh, and I subscribed to your mailing list - nice P.S. message for $7 ;))

    Thanks for the reply.

Hey no problem, and being a member of my list is one of the best ways to learn list building as, all of the methods I use work for me and can in turn be made to work for you. As I say in my newsletter, just watch what I do and you can turn it around and use it in your own newsletter or emails series.

One question - why do half the squeeze pages that I visit have some sort of money floating around. For me if I see a sqeeze page or sales page with money all over it, I immediatley think scam and go elsewhere. Is that only me or do pictures of money turn people off? Also the same with pictures of Mansions, yachts, superman, Mars and other things.

Lots of times they are scams. That is where getting people to know who you are comes in.

If people learn to know who you are and if you deliver them to quality products and quality programs then they will build their trust for you. I have many people contact me for my affiliate links all the time, because of that. They ask if I tried a program, and if I have and think it is for them, I give them my links.

The main thing you have to consider, if it seems to good to be true, than it usually is.

I'm talking from creating a squeeze page view. Would it be wise to put pictures of money and other things on your sqeeze page? I see that you have on the site in your signature.

I personally haven't considered it and I don't think I ever will, however I am interested to know if those types of images attract people to buy/subscribe

It's not really so much the imagery as it is the a professional looking site.

John I haven't read any of this thread so this might have been said:

Your opt-in list means you have a direct contact source with potential customers in your niche. Effectively, you can click a button and contact them all.

How you approach them, keep in contact with them and all that other stuff all depend on the way you write your mails, how often you send them out and the content of them.

People say the "money is in the list" simply because if you craft it that your list actually love what you say and do, they will part with their money and give it to you for products, etc.

Also, if you ever feel like selling the list, as long as it's all double opt-in and spam compliant, etc - you can actually sell it.

    Hope that helped/

Spot on. Thank you for sharing that, and that is one of the greatest perks of building a list.
