I've never used Gimp, but Photoshop on the PC does what I need...I do need a new program for my PowerBook...I'll check out gimp. Lorien, its a forum...some posts aren't going to change your life...try to come to grip with that without being rude. Brandon
Some things I find are easier to do in photoshop and/or work better and conversely with gimp the same. So for some things I use gimp and others photoshop. Although primarily I use photoshop at this point.
It's however hard to repair an image with gimp, but other than that.. GIMP is easier to use and have fun filters You can also create your own filters if you can handle script-fu
GIMP is good but it needs a better user interface. Photoshop has the interface down, now if only the price was not so darn high.
I have tried Gimp 2.0 when it came out, but I found it disconcerting. I couldn't get used to the different way it rendered inages and whatnot. It was something I found really strange, anyways - but - sure a few people really like gimp. I think some of them may be on Linux and pretty technically proficient (nerds) or maybe started using it first. Once I get used to something, I find it hard to learn something else, especially after PhotoShop. I found that hard enough to use, and eventually I just went to FF (wannabe fake nerd) What blows me away is that GIMP is free, and PS not cheap, but way more people use it. I think we all (mostly) just hear about it first.
I just couldn't get into GIMP... Personally, I thought it was shit by comparison... Even not by comparison it was shit - it just wasn't an easy to use product... Don't get me wrong, I love open source - I just thought this was a crap application.
I've always used Photoshop until I moved to Linux now I use GIMP, I don't thinks its a good as photoshop, however I could just not be used to it and, it îs unlike photoshop free.
Though I'd hardly consider myself a decent graphics designer, I can handle some simple tasks. I 've been using GIMP (Or GIMP for Windows rather.... a GIMP converted to run on Windows) for all my graphics for about a year or two now and I can honestly say the past few versions have really been much more stable and user friendly. As far as Photoshop goes, it's awesome, but there's just no way I could pay $700 for it. One drawback for The GIMP has been it's lack of resources. The web abounds with tutorials and lessons for Adobe where if you manage to find something GIMP related it's often 2-5 years old and applies to almost obsolete versions. But even that is changing. there is one site at www.gimptalk.com that's just refreshing. Great tutorials and a very active disscussion board. I have a list of GIMP sites on my personal site that are helpful. It's http://phil.frihost.net/graph_lay.html. In my opinion, GIMP (Or GIMP for Windows) is worth a try. Who knows, maybe you'll save $700.
Well, you're certainly inciting me to post this comment... While on the other hand, although the insight I gained from this post was minimal, I decided not to waste further time complaining about it. However, I consider the time I've just spent on this post entirely well spent - Jamie
I've never used Photoshop, but my guess is professional graphic artists choose Adobe over Gimp. It's been said that Gimp is comparable to Paint Shop Pro, and should suffice for beginner-to-intermediate tasks. I don't mean to be judgmental, but anyone who is doing only beginner-to-intermediate tasks with Photoshop probably has a pirated version, because why would they dish out all that money when they could be using Gimp for free.
