.INFO domain bad for SEO?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by guppyman, Jul 3, 2007.

    Hi People,

I have heard that .info domains are bad for Search Engine Optimisation.

Is it true that search engines will discriminate .info domains so much so that they will not rank as well as .COM or .Net?

    Thanks.

Nope, nothing like that. An info and a com have an equal chance of ranking for a particular keyword. A com enjoys the type in traffic advantage.

The reason why infos are thought to be spammy by the general population is the fact that they are cheap, and most of the spammers prefer to buy them.

Otherwise, no reason for you not to buy an info.

You heard wrong. Search Engines do not care if a site is a .info or .com or .net etc

I've seen sites who are number 1 in google who use the .biz or .us tld.

You also should search the forum as this question has been asked many times before.

it all depends on your content. even blogspot sites rank well in google. take for example for the phrase "make money online" the no. 2 site http://moneymakerinfo.blogspot.com/ - hosted on blogspot ;)

Yep, as everyone else is saying, .INFO domains are not treated as lesser in any way by search engines.

The only thing "bad" about .info from an SEO perspective is that uneducated web users tend to think all sites end with ".com", meaning that if you own example.com, you will get more "type in traffic" and unique visitors than example.info

However, you may get around this using good promotion techniques.

+ .info is becomming more and more popular and well known amongst general internet users. So stick with it if you have one, don't ditch it :)

No it makes no difference for Google.
But people trust more .com sites.

Only country specific domains would rank less well for international searchers.

.info, .com and the rest are all the same. Even .edu site itself has no SEO value just because of the extension.

Search engines don't care but you will have a hard time building links to a blogspot blog or a .info domain. Nobody trusts them.

    My priority.
    1).com
    2).net
    3).org
    4) Country specific e.g. .co.uk or .us etc
    and then the rest.

    Talking about google.

Can any one show me a live example where the above mentioned domains rank lower than .info or .biz? (It should be High traffic keywords.)

Yeah; I have also not heard about .info being bad.
What you do want to look out for is the country specific ones. If you get country specific ones and you are trying to hit the international market - then you will only be making your life harder.
If you are trying to hit a certain country however; then get that specific countries ccTLD (eg: .co.uk or .co.za) before a .com or .info

Unless its a country specific TLD, it isn't going to make any difference in SEO
