A potential buyer wants an appraisal for a domain, but he wants it to be paid for.

What sites are the best in terms of cost and turn around time?

I agree, a buyer should basically do his own appraisal to see what it's worth to him. If he doen't have the confidence in himself to do that, he can go out and get the domain appraised himself w/o even telling you.

Old scam, he will then say "I have read that the services of www.crapsite.com are good, so please get an appraisal there and let me know what they say"

Of course, he is the owner of crapsite and you are just wasting your money since once you get your appraisal you will never hear from him again

Thanks for the advice, I can't believe I almost fell for it.

There was a little update to the scam - rather than just say what appraisal service to use, he directed me to a forum post where he had previously asked the "experts" what to use. Looking back at it, the forum was clearly fake and set up to make the guy look credible.

After I told him I wouldn't use a paid appraisal and let him know what I thought of the forum, his e-mails stopped.

Yes, that was a well-known scam.
The alleged forum was an artificial one.
Can't believe that guy is still around.

Yes he is still around... last week I got 2 different offers for 2 .info (you know the free ones) parked at Sedo.
One was asking to get an appraisal from www.crapsite.com with referral from crapforum.info.
The other one was to get an appraisal from www.biggercrapsite.com with referral from anothercarpforum.org.

Did you try to reply by email? it's an autoresponder with different messages depending on the email sequence.

Guess what... both email were reported to samcop.

Yep scam, had those offers as well. The guy can either offer what he believes the domain is worth or pay for the appraisal him/her self.

Fryman said it best though ;)
