I know that for some terms sometimes you get the same website in the first spot and then on the second one as an indented result, but now I am seing that same thing on spots 1 AND 2, so 2 websites are taking out 4 listing spots! WTF? Since when did this started to happen?
It's not happening with all serps, at least not for me. I see that kind of thing pretty regularly - and I have for a long time now.
Really? I never noticed it until a few days ago when my main keyword was starting to show it and thanks to that I am bumped down to #10
It normally happens when there are two pages of equal importance from within the same site. The second page (providing it ranks within 20 spots or so of the first ) is dragged up below the top ranking page from the same site and indented. I try to make it happen n client sites as often as possible. All you need to do is optimise two pages for the same phrase and Bobs your uncle, you just shoved the number 10 site off the first page.
It's always been like that actually. The grouping (indenting) has never been limited to the top site... for example 2 sites indented: [search=google]isp billing software[/search]. Even more obvious if you show more than 10 results: http://www.google.com/search?q=isp+billing+software&num=100
That's something I noticed also... showing 10 results will only show normal serps for the terms I'm checking, showing 50 results will show loads of indented ones
It's because it takes the normal position of the 2nd listing from within the results on the current page (regardless of how many you choose to show) and group the 2nd one with the highest position. For example if a site was #3 and #23, the #23 listing would only be grouped with the #3 listing if you are showing 23 or more per page. It's definitely a good tactic (that I've used in the past) to go for #1 and then rank a secondary page at #10 (or better).
Everyday is a school day online If we visit the right places. This is one of the reasons finding the right forum is so worthwhile. I personally can only focus on one or two things to keep up with, there are a group of people here for example who know masses of amounts on things I know very little about (scripting, PPC as two examples) We share it all with each other, and all gro together
The other day I did a search that came up with 7 regular results and 3 results for a different search midway down the page... I'm guessing powered by Google suggest, but this sucks for rankings.
fryman - not related to this thread (sorry others), but figured you'd want to know --- it seems your site has a latency issue today. It takes a long time for it to start loading. Once it does, it loads fast, but it took like 15 seconds before it even started doing anything.
Don't worry... moving over to a dedicated server in a couple of days VPS can't handle my sites... I just took a look and load was at 30
So what you're really saying is that you didn't notice, or care, until it occurred to you? I have that same tunnel vision
