Yes they do and that's what I was aiming at and probably why phpLynx gives so much away free. Everyone's telling this OP to spend money but what if he hasn't got any?

Anyway, sure he'll make his own choice and best of british luck to him/her. :)

Let's get back to the thread....
My opinion is: online directory is surely more expensive than offline one :D

    Hello...

You should have a few bucks say 1-2 thousand for link building within the first 3 months
of the sites creation as well as enough money for a nice template and a few must have mods..

Im sure someone will come by trying to say...

ohhh you can start for free blah blah blah...

but ask them where are they at in the directory food chain... Exactly.... non exsistant

    thx

You can start with $7 :)
    - domain $6
    - hosting $1/month
    - Script free
    - Skin Free
And you are on the business…of free directories

Then you post it a DP saying that is going to be heavily promoted etc..

You start getting a bunch of submissions, then after a while you realize 90% of submissions are crappy sites, submitted to the wrong category and with keyword stuffed titles.

And now you spend countless hours reviewing sites and fixing submissions and make almost no money selling featured links, so you can’t spend it on marketing.

My advice is make a paid directory from day 1, but for this you need to invest..

I'm just starting up with a mate of mine. We've enough money for hosting, and I can code well enough to create a directory from scratch with all the good features seen interspersed throughout the other big directories, plus some new ideas of our own. (More on that when it's up and running)

I reckon we might be able to scrounge up £100 or so for some budget marketing, maybe call in a few favours and I think we'll be PR3, verging on 4 in 3 months or so. I'm also hoping all the extra work and ideas we put in will attract people looking to buy links who know what they're doing, and recognise a quality directory when they see one.

Running a Web Directory is just not about installing scripts, getting hosted and marketing, its about creating a domain name which really got the link juice for which people pay you for each links.

Running a Simple Web Directory can simply cost you 10$ (Domain Name) & since if you are interested in paid hosting, just add the minimal set budget as per your needs. Then comes selecting which Directory Script to choose in which you have option of phpLinkDirectory, phpLynx, and many such options.

But if you are just a starter, and dont have any idea. Then I would recommend you to go through the threads in this section, read many replies discussed on this type of threads. And then see yourself by learning from other big known web directories on how they are doing there business, what they did while starting your directory, and getting other information from clear observation.

There are many who started with initial 100$ investment and after that whatever they earn from there listing, keep on re-investing which makes there directory value more better.

Running a Web Directory, can be a easy job. But making it worth while will be another thing ;)

    Hello...

Please let me try and explain the word ( PROMOTION )

It means to spend $$ on your website/blog/forum/directory By
Buying Advertising space and Quality Backlinks for your site and a
few other nessesary tools for your site to become something...

The word (Promotion) DOES NOT mean ...

    Hi... :)

I just created a new directory with $0 and offer $1 dollar regs and $5 dollar featured links for a limited Time...

Im not sure Why people get these meanings mixed up as they are totally 2 different things..

    thx

    i agree.

starting a free directory is pointless. It needs a lot more time approving submissions, and you earn virtually no revenue from it, except for the occasional featured links.

Well i dont understand the word "pointless" as everything has its purpose ;)

Personally i think its just the "middle eastern way of thinking" or of "those less fortunate then others" that its great business to collect or receive rather then invest.... as many who have this way of thinking never want to pay for anything and the reason they dont go far with thier businesses as its a 2 way street.

    thx

you start a business/website to make money. unless its a forum/non profit/family site.

So why would you want to spend all day running a directory for free? you wouldnt go help the homeless all day for free, so why review submissions for free? my opinion anyways (any i am a charitable person btw :))

Sigh!! Your right, I came and posted you can set up for free and you can. You can also make a good success of a directory in the long term which is what directories should be about.

Also I don't have a vested intested or 50 of them in your case to tell the OP that he needs to invest thousands in 'link building', he can do it free as duval said, it just takes a bit longer.

Comment on food chain, jeez are you real!!

Stop, ask YOURSELF where YOU are in the so-called 'food chain', what with 50 directories plus and all. Ego city baby, ego city.

Truth be know OP, none of the posters here make anywhere near a 100k net a year with thier individual directories, only ones who do make real money probably don't post here. Food chain, gimme a break.

@Synchronium, I can almost guarantee that you wouldn't even need to spend a hundred quid to get a PR4. People need to stop falling for all this crap you need to buy links to get to that stage, hard fact is you dont.

Well i make a couple bucks and manage to pay for hosting and keep myself above
water as well as pay my advertising budget and link building all from my little 50 directories so... :)

I never said YOU cant be successful starting a directory with Nothing
But dont expect it to be anything anytime in the immediate future as it will
Take $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$<---- That stuff to make it happen.

PS... i know exactly were i am in the food chain ;)
and its very high compared to some as i pay my way
and dont ask for hand outs or freebies every minute

PS.. Do you own a directory?
Since all i see is your phpld advertising

    thx
