I am considering renting a small office in a building somewhere to get out of my house. My home office is great, but i find that I am becoming less productive gradually. When I actually drove to an office, i was extremely focused without any distractions. It will be an unwarranted expense, but I am sure that my production and profits will increase quite a bit. The added structure will be nice also... Anyone?
I was paying for an office for about 2 years. I think it did help productivity and focus. Then a few months ago my brother bought a new XKR and I was like "damn! I wish I had the money to blow on one of those". I got my landlord to let me out of my lease as of last month and guess what I drive now Now my productivity is way up again with the motivation of the new car. For me I need to change things up a bit to help re-focus. I might get an office again in the future but for now I'm doing fine without.
Stay away from the TV . Its to easy to eat lunch, watch tv and spend 2 hours sitting there before you know it. Also I find using a task manager helps and even writing down what you do during the day just to see what you waste the most time on. I do however agree, when away from the comforts of home you get more work done. Mark
I agree..I think actually renting an office building would greatly improve production. Unfortuanitly, I don't have the extra cash. But if i could afford to rent one, I most certainly would!..Never done it before..but Im sure it would be less distractions..which in return, would show higher productivity
I've gone both ways. There are times I would appreciate an office, but it's an unreasonable expense considering any productivity issues I have at home are self induced. You can get a better deal than me, but with the office comes upkeep expenses and internet access - which for me was significantly more than at home. If you go for it, look for an executive suite with shared resources - like copy machines, secretaries, conference rooms, etc. While not entirely necessary, the environment is good (self motivated people all around) and the resources are very convenient. Plus, it adds client legitimacy when they come in.
I dont have any problem being productive in my home office. I'd really only consider renting space if I need to employ 2 or more people. Having said that, I like the idea of serviced offices for startups because of the extra company and you get to bounce ideas off each other.
For those who start in a small office can always expand have some more people coming into work for you. It makes you feel good when you have to cut paychecks because your actually running a business.
I have 4 employee now. One is my sister, one is my junior at highschool and the last two are getting from looking. My bussiness very good right now in my opinion, and do it mobile. I have already set some system so that everybody get along nicely where ever they are. Most of the time I just doing it in my bedroom. Receiving repost and all virtually. Hope it help for everyone
I had a office for a few months but then realized that I could save some money if I had a decent dedicated office. So i bought a new house that has a office room and two extra rooms that I use for my employees, saves me money because I don't have to pay for a mortgage and office space at the same time, plus it's a tax write off! The way I stay focused on work is having a to-do list for each day, everything on it gets done each day so work is getting done.
Doesn't help at all. If it's JUST you in it... No difference from being in a room at your house it gets just as messy and your just as likely to procrastinate. Hence the essence of my post!
There does seem quite many distractions at home. But renting an office is not cheap and not really worth it uunless you have a team of people working for you.
The environment can definitely effect how productive you are. (It's some sort of conditioning thing ). However, it's a bit too pricey and totally out of my budget. When I go work, I just end up either at the library on campus or on a cafe.. anywhere far from home.
One of the problems I have experienced with working out of your home is people feel free to drop in and chat.
I like my home office, I get a nice tax right off on the depriciation on my room.... I was thinking of renting a wharehouse/office because I might start something new...
I rented an office for about 4 years, gave it up a few month ago. Got it back again about a week ago....and now I live there (literally)
I think Im going to try it out for a month and see how it goes. I like the idea of a shared office iwth printers, copier, etc. Im going to look for a month to month so I dont have to sign a lease. I have worked at home for the past 3 years and it is great but I feel cabin fever every now and then... I'll let you know how it goes.
I wanted to get an office for a while now but like the others said, being there alone doesn't seem to provide any motivation or benefit over a home office. I was talking to a few people to see if anyone wanted to join in and go at it together... cheaper and provides for a nicer environment, but it seems as I was the only one who saw the benefit. For me the worst part about working from home is the lack of actual interaction with co-workers (chat and forum don't count), and the fact that it's just too easy for the wife/kid to walk up and disturb you in the middle of something. (or ask for help with a house chore at the most inconvenient times) Cheers. Pete.
I'm a huge fan of the home office. In fact, we just purchased a new home with a huge office, so that will be motivating.
