I'm convinced: Alexa is not important

I read before that the alexa rank isn't relevant, so I made an experiment.
I didn't visit my website using Firefox(+Alexa toolbar) for one month. Guess what? I dropped about 30.000 positions. But my taffic increased by around 40 uniques/day last month. Now, I sell sinks, so I don't think my uniques are using the Alexa toolbar.
Another thing: I keep a close eye on my competition and I see one owner is submitting to many free directories, so he must know a thing or 2 about seo. He is nowhere near the first pages in G and Y! for all the related keywords, he doesn't use adwords or anything related and he has very little sales(don't ask me how I know this ;)), but he went up 100.000 positions in Alexa and he is around 100.000 positions higher than me.
So, I'm convinced: ALEXA IS NOT IMPORTANT.

Alexa is simply a tool to help you gauge the traffic of a site. We know its not completely accurate but like anything tt is a tool, and that's how it should be treated.

Yes, a tool...But how would you feel if groceries stores would have a scale which they can control?(I'm not sure they don't, though ;))

    How true!

You know what I mean though.... its a tool as in its one measure we use to make and base decisions on.

Alexa was never important in the first place for serious marketers. As the Alexa results arent accurate when u talk about some serious analysis.

The only stats that truly matter are conversion stats that you should be tracking through your own methods at all times.

Conversion stats include the ratio of signups per visiter. Like 10 unique visits equaled 2 signups giving me a 2% conversion rate.

I would rather call Alexa stats INDICATOR not a tool.

I think that Alexa is pretty much useless, even as an indicator. I have seen them be easily fooled by websites buying cheap pop-under ads that were totally useless, etc.

    10 visitors and 2 signups...isn't that a 20% conversion?

lol probably. You've got me in a tired moment.

note also that I said sign ups. Why try to get a lot of traffic if you have nothing for them to sign up to? No way to follow up and seal the deal?

Alexa gives a general idea of how a site is progressing. I agree the results are highly inaccurate with the smaller sites, however I think Alexa is much more accurate with more established sites. It is a very useful tool when doing a competitive analysis, and to see trends in certain markets.

I have always said that alexa is not important, but there are still many people asking if they should follow the alexa stats, or if there is some way that they can increase it. Same answer to those people!

Welcome to the REAL web. Now you can laugh at people that buy solely on Alexa rank, using it as a determiner of value. That's when you know you have an amateur:)

I look at Quantcast as well as Alexa. They track pretty well together. Of course, I am not trying to trick the rankings, since it would serve no purpose to trick myself. But, when used as an indicator, I find that both of these sites have some value. If there are better sites, I would be interested.
