How much would a social networking site cost to develop? If you wanted it unique to the rest already out there?

If anyone could give me a rough price, i would appreciate it.

Depends on all of what you want to have the site do. I think the $1000 is actually to cheap for the amount of work that would be involved in a project of that size.

I agree, I would say $1,000 is a little on the cheap side. It does really depend upon the design, and functionality you want. I would say that the best approach would be to discuss you requirements with some local developers, or via PM's on the forum. you need to get a good idea of requirements first though.

I think it would be more than $5k, but marketing is what really will cost you.
You can find a crap load of new social networking sites trying to find their way here:
    www.killerstartups.com.

It's a very big market, with a lot of players big and small, and most of them, will not make it.
It seems everyone and their mother has one now.

I think your success will depend on your marketing.
You can't out a price on design without knowing, what you want to do, what options you are offering, and a bunch of other things.

Depending on how many features you require, I would say you could find someone to develop a custom solution around the 5k-7k price point.

Provided that "develop" in this case means the process from the actual project realization phase to getting it to a self-sustainable state:

    - Development: to make it unique, simple, and bug-free: between $5000 and $15000 depending on the size and your objectives
    - Marketing plan (the business plan should be ready): between $1000 and $6000+ (again depending on the timeframe and research required)
    - Marketing operations for the first year: at least $5000

Other opinions may vary widely. I have not considered choosing good offshore companies.

The coding, design and all will be the cheap part for you. Its advertising it that will take the price toll
