i stay away from sites like hostgator. they just oversell. offer you the world for $4. they give you thousends of GBs of bandwidth, but that doesnt matter as if you breach the tiny CPU usage they give you then bang. terminated account. i prefer smaller hosts that have more time and care to deal with any problems that occur.

www.webhostingtalk.com < thats a great forum for finding the ultimate host

i have shared hosting and semi dedicated hosting at www.downtownhost.com

its great, great prices, great plans. cpanel, php, mysql, plenty bandwidth. perfect for hosting a directory.

Yes, that is true. What about cpu/ ram usage on hostgator? how many online users per acoount? Is anybody try? I think around 200 online users is the limit (like %3 cpu) isnt it?

I have four servers on HostGator :D
    One on HostMonster :)
    And One on Netfirms :(

    Always recommended: HostGator for directories.!
Netfirms,Well never recommended, doesn't even let you enable SEO freindly URLS's. Hostmonster has problem updating pagerank for your listings via any known tool. So it's okay to have bidding directories there.

I had at one time over 50 web directories hosted with hostgator and never faced a problem with them - so I would definitely recommend hostgator :)

Don't even think about it, if you are planning to put up a directory.

I fell in it's trap when they had a plan wherein they offer a domain, and web hosting for a complete one year...all for $10 . Haaa.. talk about being cheap, this was as good as free. But now there is no such plan available. But it was a trap alright
No CPanel, not many scripts, the whole admin panel sucks. Moreover only three domains in that server.
I have moved my sites now to another registrar and host.
Finally got out of it's web!
Though no idea how other reseller plans behave like. But for surely, they do not have CPanel!
Stick to hostgator. They are the best!

What's the difference for you when you talk about having your directories on a hosting from having other kind of sites on a hosting?
I don't understand why you make that difference

By the way you are talking about hostgator: how is the support? Is it fine?
For me that's the "point" when I choose for a hosting company. The other is they allow me to have more than one site with the same package which it looks in hostgator in unlimited, is this correct?
