Well I make use of both browsers depending on the computer I'm using. As for security honestly if you're using one because you think it's more secure you're asking for trouble. Since FF has caught on there has been pretty much the same number of exploits for it as IE. What's even more interesting is in Vista anyways IE7 may be safer than Firefox due to the sandbox mode (IE runs as it's own user not as the user logged in) so a lot of the exploits are stuck to the permissions of the browser.
@The last paragraph on Vista: Really? I never knew that...do you know of a website that explains it more?
well i switched from ie to firefox after ie was really slowing down my computer, but i like how the new ie has got the tabbed interface, it makes it run more smoothly but i still dont like it though. chris
Really only dev blog about it: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/02/09/528963.aspx I'm sure a google search should bring up more recent stuff.
Switched to firefox years ago, as there was such a gap btw it and earlier ie5 ie6. However more and more so firefox seems to be getting slower and hogging system resources. If not for feeling more comfortable in firefox and being used to it i think i would be back to ie7, which seems decent at first use. Might try the new Safari or Opera though.
IE 7 is much better than FF specially the font rendering it is very smooth. As it is a integrated browser it always load faster than FF but you are always in more risk if you visit pishing, crack etc site. So for general browsing better to use IE7 and risky site with FF.
Of course as I mentioned earlier in Vista anyways the IE is running in a restricted user and only has access to a few folders so temp, cookies (for that account) and such. So those in the wild exploits at this point anyways probably shouldn't cause any real harm. The most recent one for windows the ANI actually didn't even work in IE7 under vista because of this yet under firefox it did. I was pretty surprised by this but it makes sense. But if you're on XP though I'd agree FF is probably safer for those sorts of sites since FF is less of a target than IE the chances of running into a 0 day exploit is probably less.
I agree Firefox got things right a while back, the most notable for me being page rendering (I mean there was a Google page that wouldn't render properly in IE but worked fine in FF) and tabbed browsing. I have to use Firefox for my online banking as the site doesn't work with IE. Sadly though my accessibility software is not fully FF compatible so it's a strain on my eyes to use it, therefore I'm still 90% with Ie. H.
I use IE because Firefox doesn't have support for many things like Glow, shadow, text fades, etc. also, Firefox you have to download so many freakin plugins just to get a site running where as IE comes with more support for things. Also if you REALLY want a secure browser, try using Maxthon.
Firefox uses memory because it actually does something! IE does what it wants whenever it feels like getting around to it. Yeah just download apache. I have it on mine so I can test WP themes, PHPLD etc. without uploading it anywhere I think you downloaded the wrong firefox. It's just install and go. You don't have to get any addons if you don't want to. The ones I use as colour picker (can IE do that?), SEO (Can IE do that?), FasterFox (Can IE do that?), PDF Download (So pdf's don's open in a browser window and freeze... can IE do that?), HTML validator (I can see whether a page is valid or not just by looking at the tick or the cross, and when I double click it it shows me the code and can fix most of the errors, can IE do that?), Adsense Notifier (in my status bar it shows my adsense for the day, can IE do that?), PONG (I can play games of pong against other FF users, can IE do that?) They are just examples. IE has no where near the amount of addon's and extensions that firefox does, and never will, purely for the fact firefox is more community orientated and IE is produced by Microsoft and Microsoft only.
Exactly. With all the extensions, Firefox has virtually unlimited possibilities for extra features and customization.
FF sucks....... tooo much resources and I'm sick of it. But then again, plugins are great. and oh FF's good for web standards development. So I'm still sticking w/ FF
