afaik, you can. but be careful, you will not be able to claim your domain.

also remember one thing, there's some service out there which track changes on whois records. what does this mean? if you change your whois to a new fake address, your visitor will still be able to know your old informations.

Using a fake name/address is a violation of domain registration policy...

Using whois guard or PO box is a better option..

Using a fake address is against the terms of service that you accept when you register the name, so technincally the name could get taken from you.

In reality, that hardly ever happens.

Unless its a really valuable domain, go ahead and do it.

You might want to read this report.

You certainly can input fake data. And the registrar can suspend and eventually
delete it if it gets reported and you don't reply on time.

    Thanks for the replies.

The solution I am thinking is that if I make my own whois guard site to protect my sites whois details. Is this ok or for such sites I have to take permission from icann?

Best to check with ICANN First.

The Whois Guard typically uses the Registrar's real address and details and all emails sent to the anonymized email would be forwarded to the real email address anyways. They are not fake, they are just anonymized but all details are valid.

Do not use fake details in your Whois because you need to use real details according to the terms. Fake details can lead to your domain names being taken away from you.

You don't need ICANN's permission to use any privacy service. What they do
want is the domain name to display complete, accurate technical (DNS, date
of expiration, etc.) and social contact data (registrant, contact info, etc.).

It is then the registrar's immediate responsibilty per their contracts to ensure
    that.

Well, then that may not be permitted. Namecheap has it as

The address and phone number is that of Namecheap. I don't think you can do like what you plan to do as it is pretty much fake.
