Why Are There So Many Directories?

I began submitting my two sites to directories about a year ago. Mostly I submit to free directories, but I have paid for listings in a few cases.

Anyway, when I started, I had no idea that there are so many directories. In fact there must be at least one or two thousand, and apparently more are created everyday.

Most of these directories are hardly used at all by the general public. So what is their purpose? Do directory owners think that this is an easy way to make money?

Mostly their used by many people to get backlinks and eventually some pr for their sites.

Regarding an easy way to get money, i wish they were, they are high maintenence and can cost a lot if someone wants to start promoting their own directory hard.

Many people give up so soon after their birth you tend to see many that have already gone, but many will continue, some will rise above the average and of course everyday a few more are born.

 

well ... most of us need backlinks and PR, from the customer point of view...

But from the owners point of view...a good directory could be a serious source of money

 

Its like every Person has a Car these days?

Some carefully drive the car and maintain it.. keep its running strong!

Some drink n drive n meet with accidents or drive recklessly and hurt others n themselves and then their car is living in the garage!

by now a few million easy...

WHY?
because others think that a fortune can be made by using OLD techniques
like throw them up and get a million submissions which isnt going to happen..

It takes money to make money online BUT they will never grasp that thought as
they are mostly known as QBCs and im sure google will respond soon enough.

We're normally in accordance but Online is one of the FEW places you can make money with no money. Setup a blog or website on something you are passionate bout, write awesome content.... You are rigth though regarding a directory; the way the market is today you NEED $ to get it going, to get traffic and noticed. Without those you'll never get submissions and without submissions.... Apart from that point I agree with the above!

 

Maybe some think easy, but in fact it is not. I have seen many directories died in the last year.

Directory business is a hard work, needs 7x24 support.

 

Because Everybody needs lot of search engine optimization done for their 100s of sites..

One directory will not help - So there are "lots of directories "

 

For a few reasons
A)Directories like Aviva, Alive, etc bring an inspiration towards upcoming webmasters who want to become successful and therefor new directories are being created everyday by these upcoming webmasters .
B)Webmasters create directories everyday in order to earn some kind of profit or to complete their dreams of one day becoming a successful directory such as the one's listed above.

More over Scripts like phpld, phplb etc have made a lot of proggress and it is very easy to own a directory

I have always wondered this myself. I have submitted my sites to a bunch of free directories but have never pulled the trigger on actually paying for higher ranking sites. Maybe we should look into it.

 

simple answer : There are a lot sites and growing everyday.

 

It does seem that the market is saturated now.

 

Just do it better than anyone else and be original. My first site is a directory, not sure why apart from the fact that it was a great way to learn asp.net and the basics of SEO. Perhaps that's why there are so many and the fact that there are numerous scripts about so anyone can become a directory owner.

 

If everything was only done once in life...life would suck. I bet there are more forums on the net than directories. In a few year, there will be thousands of social networking sites too. Why? Money, coding experience, personal hobby, etc...
