Add Text to Image Online

Discussion in 'Graphics & Multimedia' started by iShopHQ, Jun 3, 2007.

I had an idea after reading a news article about lolpresidents, a site where people post pictures of presidents and presidential candidates with (sometimes) funny captions. I thought: "Wouldn't it be cool if there was a site where you could upload and add the text to the image right online?"

So this weekend I built it.

    www.AddCaption.com
Add Text to an Image Online

You can resize images online too.

    Check it out...

thanks sushi! I had fun doing it.

Today I added the capability to paste in an image URL and AddCaption will go out and get the image so you can add your caption to it.

What else would anyone like to see?

    More enhancements:

Pimped the home page after getting feedback on how 'ugly' it was

Added some images with captions I made myself using AddCaption.com (celebrity endorsements!)

Altered the add text process to allow you to add a caption at both the top and bottom of the image

interesting that you would mention that marioland....

    Latest News:
Did some major cleanup/pimping on the form used to add the text to the image. Got rid of most of the radio buttons and went for dropdowns, which gives more room for options. Also added in a 'preview' of sorts, so you can see how your choices will affect the text you're putting into the image. Have I mentioned what a pain in the ass JavaScript is? Also, the 'underline' preview doesn't work on FireFox; seems it doesn't recognize the JavaScript textDecorationUnderline attribute. Couldn't find a hack to make it work either, so if you know one, send it to me.

Got a gmail addy and added a contact link too.

Next is to cleanup the other radio buttons...

Decent idea, a bit like ytmnd.com. Don't make it to similar, you WON'T beat YTMND.com at it's own game ;).

checked out YTMND, pretty cool. much more than I'm aiming for though. there are some online image editors you can use, and roflbot, but that's about it.

next step is saving images to a DB i think, then I can look at a voting process....

Found a way to call the Save As dialog with a button, so I added that. No more complicated right-click-save-as to save the images you create...

Latest update: save and voting added!

After you add text to an image, you now have the option to save the image for voting.

Enter your email (you have to confirm your email, so make sure it's valid) and then tag your image. Use as manay tags as you want up to a total of 100 characters, with each tag separated by commas (tag 1,tag2, this is tag3, etc.,).

Then click submit and your image will be added. It won't be live until you've confirmed your email address. Once you've confirmed your email, the image will be available for voting on the site.
