It's true that you can get good traffic from a directory without spending a fortune. For example, other than a very effective "niche" directory that sends me good traffic, my best traffic from a general directory (about 60 visits per month) comes from www.2yi.net. And a regular link costs just $15.95 for the PR4 inner page I am listed on. I bought my daughter a PR4 link for her website, too, on that directory.

its not just about traffic. It's about a strong mandate or backlink from a quality directory that has reviewed your site. That is more important. If you want traffic, get blog posts, if you want strong backlinks, directories. Different solutions for different problems and for those who insist that directories are not worth paying for, speak to the hundreds of professional SEO companies and ask them why they are paying for it. One simple reason - it gets the clients websites in front on SERPs.

Correct, jl. I have personally bought paid links on 89 directories in the past month and a half, because I do strongly believe in the SERPs benefits you mention. I have two dozen keywords/phrases on Google's front page.

But the post I was referring to correctly said you don't need to buy $50 links to get good directory traffic. He is right.

Built links regularly, do not built some - stop for a time and then go very quickly if your site is new.

DO NOT expect to see results overnight and unless you are dealing with SEOs with large resources, don't be told that you can be on page 1 overnight. Stable page 1s take time to build up unless you have a bottomless pit of money. Remember that in the longterm SERPs like good original content.

Don't focus on more than 5 or 6 keywords at a time (and at first, start with only 1 or 2). If you try to be everything to everybody, you'll get no traffic because all your keywords are mediocre in the SERPs.

The thread - SEO for newbies, may be helpful to you.

Newbies tend to link to everyone because they typically think:

    link exchange = SEO

If they don't even know what link exchange is, they probably don't know much about SEO, so they might be using frame or flash with little content on the home page. Again, typically they don't even know what keywords to target nor knows keyword suggestion tools and other SEO tools....

Dont sumbit in many search engines. Because 95% of traffic comes from google, yahoo and msn. So just focus on these three search engines. Dont waste your time by submitting into other search engines. And never pay anyone to submit in search engines (total waste of money).

Actually: don't submit to search engines at all. If you've got links to your site, the search engines will find your content. If not, they likely won't list your site in the serps anyhow.

Make sure you diversify your link building.

-Get links by different methods...directories, articles, PR, blogposts etc.
-Vary your anchor text and make the links look natural.
-Don't point all links to your home page...get links to individual pages too.
-Don't interlink all your sites unless they are in the same niche.

Of course, as far as possible use original good quality content :).
