How do I get on DMOZ?

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by ZachH, Sep 10, 2005.

    Hi

I launched my site in March and here is where I am by now:
    Alexa Rank 86,518
    Google Backlinks 11
    Yahoo Backlinks 1,490
    PageRank 4
More than a thousand visitors every day

I think I’ve done ok and this is what I don’t understand, why can’t I get listed on DMOZ?

Here is what I’ve done so far:
    April – Submitted the site
July – Sent e-mail to editor
September – Sent e-mail to editor with CC to staff

I’m just in the blind, haven’t heard anything from Dmoz at all.

So please anyone what should I do to get listed? I’m willing to go pretty far. All ideas are very welcome.

    Thanks.

Thats the way it works. Sit tight, wait and hope...

In the mean time, move on to getting backlinks elsewhere. Really, life is too short to wait for DMOZ.

I ve been waiting for 2 years, than decided “ forget it…” and accidentally it's happened

    It's here - http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=webdeal

Just wait and constantly improve website’s content.
They don’t judge on a Page Rank - only Content
    Don't send any emails..
Submit to the relevant category Only !- it's very important

    And forget it...

    You will be there...

as stated, submit it then forget about it. Just because a site is not listed in DMOZ does not mean it's not going to be a great site, just continue to get links and good content.

Dmoz is 'submit and forget' kind of directory. dont bother. I have submitted 4 sites so far and none of them are listed till date.

Given some of the discussions I've read elswhere by and about DMOZ editors, the best way to get listed is to get your site mentioned in a newspaper article. It seems, at least from my experiance, they don't pay much attention to the sites actually submitted by people who actually want to be included. The DMOZ is quickly becoming the United Nations of cyberspace, corrupt and irrelevant.

I finally managed to get one of my sites listed on DMOZ. Only took a year. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be sure to submit to the correct category with appropriate title and description. After that there is nothing much you can do.

to nfzgrld - I might ask you - why do you say that DMOZ is corrupt and irrelevant - that's a strong statement. Do you have proof? When you make a statement like that you insult the majority of ODP editors. You would never dare to say that to me in person.

BTW, your site was not accepted into ODP because your hosting company was not taking care of you properly, and your site was giving DNS errors. So a corrupt editor removed it.

    Nick,
If hope means that you can have hope that the site will some day be reviewed and maybe listed then yes, there is hope, certainly.

And yes, just wait is about the best advice.

Thousands of sites gets added daily. It's just that you have no control of whether your site will be one of them; once you have suggested your site, there is nothing else you need to do regarding DMOZ. Always spend your time improving your site; never waste time worrying about DMOZ.

I am as vocal as the next , but I will speak as I find. I know (as does everyone) that there are corrupt DMOZ editors. There are corrupt policemen, there are corrupt doctors, corrupt webmasters, corrupt everything even vicars. Their being corrupt, does not make the hospitals, policeforce, church etc corrupt, it just means that they PERSONALLY are corrupt. Guys we live in terrible times where traditional values are being cast aside for the sake of living the life and getting the money to do it.

I have had sites listed in Dmoz within days. In fact a while back in a November (can't remember if it was last or the one before), I submitted my site to DMOZ on the friday, it was included within hours, and Google updated their directory within a week, Result> Happy OWG.

Other sites I have submitted still sit there waiting. I know they are waiting, as there is absolutely no reason for them to be rejected as they are right on the button. IF they have been rejected, what can I do? Resubmit so they get rejected again? No point.

I will repeat what I always say on this matter, Do it once, Do it right, and forget about it. ALL you can do are the 3 things above. If you do it wrong, then it don't matter if the editor IS corrupt, as it is wrong and should be rejected anyhow.

    1) Do it once. - don't resubmit, what is the point? the most your going to achieve is to clog the system up further and possibly piss off the editor.

    2) do it right - read the guidelines and more importantly READ AND UNDERSTAND THEM. Find the right cat for your site, try searching for your keywords and looking at the sites in the cats displayed. Read the titles and descriptions of the sites already there, and compare them to the guidelines. These sites have been acepted, their title/descriptions are acceptable to the editor who approved them, the SAME guy possibly that will accept your site. MAKE IT EASY FOR THE EDITOR TO HIT THE ACCEPT BUTTON.

    3) Forget about it. You have done EVERYTHING in your power to ensure your submission is correct. Get on with marketing your site elsewhere.

    <Rant over > :D

Do it once, hope you did it right. Cos if you didn't you'll never get any feed back.
So yes, submit to it. If the site gets in all well and good, if it doesn't then so what.
