I have been working on a blog design for a little while now and I'm planning to integrate a Newsletter in addition to offering full RSS feeds. So I was just wondering what was the best way of going about doing this? What services and products are out? and what are their pros and cons?
I just used Google Groups and set up my own mailing list through it. I chose it as it was the cheapest and easiest way to set it up.
Are you talking about setting up a newsletter that will send your blog post via email instead of just RSS? If so, feedburner offers that option. If you are looking to set up an actual newsletter and not just send blog posts via email, I have heard that aweber is good, but I have not personally used it before.
Yep, either go with Feedburner or www.ymlp.com (easy, cheap, good, I'm using it... lots of other people are using it) - my personal recommendation www.ezinedirector.com (bit more expensive, haven't personally used - many people recommend)
Well I'd prefer to be able to send weekly emails that are maybe more summations of the posts that week. Can Feedburner do this? Also is it possible to just send out periodic emails to everyone when you have something to announce? Yeah I have also heard a lot about aweber, but have never used it. I sure would appreciate someone letting me know the benefits of opting for something like aweber.
Well, I simply think they make a good addition I use it in my blog, it's inexpensive, easy-to-use... it's 3rd party (so you don't have to worry about IPs getting blacklisted or anything). It's just good.
I am selling a newsletter script. Here is the product page: http://www.cgiwebtools.com/index.cgi?action=products&id=3 Here is the demo: http://cgiwebtools.com/demos/newsletterpro/index.html Hope it interests you.
You could use aweber or whatever service you use for your newsletter. That is what I do and it is working great. Jessica

I am curious . . . If you have an active blog . . . up and running and you are making frequent posts then why, may I ask do you feel the need to also have a newsletter ??? Basically . . . don't newsletters (ezines) and blogs serve a similar purpose . . . Perhaps I am missing something . . .
Newsletters cater to a different demographic (group of people) then blogs do. So there is a definite advantage to having a newsletter. Personally I use yahoo groups as a free e-mail newsletter service. The advantage: free and people often already have a yahoo id. They can also subscribe by just sending an e-mail to yahoo (a specific subscribe - e-mailadres. Disadvantage: doesn't show my e-mailadres as the person sending it: looks less professional. I imagine google groups has similar advantages and disadvantages.
If the newsletter has a different fous than the blog . . . what is the point or purpose to target a different democraphic group. I would have thought that a clear focus on the demographic gruop the blog targets would be achievement enough. . . . or is this what you may call split-demographic targeting.
The most traditional form of getting subscribers information is via email, it has been around for years and year and everyone knows what email is and how to read it. However the vast majority of web users have no idea what RSS is, so unless you are in a very tech savvy industry there is a very large proportion of users that would be interested in subscribing to a Newsletter rather than your RSS feed.
Has anyone had any experience with Zookoda? I was reading about their service and it sort of looked like what I was looking for. http://www.zookoda.com
Hmm... "© 2007 PayPerPostTM, Inc" notice in the footer. Not sure if that's a good or bad sign though Haven't used them.
