I have this domain where I cannot use any name servers. I have the possibility to make DNS changes and input the IP address to the server though. But how do the domain know what folder to use on the server ? And will this have an impact on SEO ?
Its a national TLD (.dk) that needs the name servers to be configured for that domain, I dont know how though. All I know is that they dont accept me to change to the name servers I want.
So the domain is now pointed to the IP, its a shared IP on hostgator, how should the domain know how to go to the right folder. Sorry, I am sure this is a stupid question But please answer if you can. Greeeeeeens of course.
the missing configuration is on the hosting/domain server part you did NOT mention if you have shared hosting package or your own server the missing config belongs to apache config file - depending on your precise server ( linux or win ) for apache2 it would be either: httpd.conf and/or default-server.conf in which you define what domain name starts at what folder-path level etc depending on how you are hosted its all your work to be done or partially may be done by host and/or you
dont know about hostgater details but on my last host ( now own server ) i had access to that file myself on my account space check hostgater details, FAQ, howtos etc and since your problem also includes hostgator internal nameserver - yes you may have to contact hostgator support as well to let them know WHAT exact domain name you are hosting if you haven't done so yet when signing up for the hostgator account then the internal nameserver should be pointed to your user-account default folder
The missing thing was an index.html file in the domain folder. I didnt make an index file because normally you will see the folder content before uploading anything. Not so when using the IP pointing it turned out. Thanks for trying Hans. Green to you.
