Directory Editors

For those who have editors for their directories:

    - how you pick a good editor
    - how much you pay him
    - how you ensure that they won't be selling spots in your directory instead of adding authority sites

I asked John Scott and he said that he have editors in his offices and that he trained them himself.

I have like 150 categories in enQuira and I need around 5 authority sites in each with unique titles and descriptions.

To that i doubt anyone will reply cause its more of a personal thing and most do not disclose the wages.

But if i ever hired any editor i would not pay him will make him work for free like dmoz does :p

I doubt there will be many editors --because it is a very very tedious job. I have started editing my own directory and have finished around 100 categories only since last 3 weeks:(.

Besides --be careful to list Authority sites --with unique titles and descriptions. Many have link policies--and if something is changed --one might get into LEGAL trouble.

Best can be illustrated with your directory about this point--

If I link your directory and list it in an appropriate category that you do not like --and you have a link policy in place--you can always take action against me.

    Its not just easy.

I have an unwritten link policy which states you must link to me or you give me the right to take action against you. :p

I don't think there's much that can be done about how you link to another site as long as you do not violate their intellectual property rights and are not libelous.

I do know of a few directories who have employed editors and it looks like it's mutually beneficial for them. Maybe try the Services forum to gauge interest?

Hehhehe-- You will get it once I get PR8:p

Regarding link policies --lemme give ya examples. I was to link a highly valued medical site and while checking the Privacy Policy/Link Policy - I came accross that -I had to give my e-mail, contact info and ofcourse site URL if I was to link them:(
Being a highly valued site--I had to fork out those info. And I have found some more like that.

So one just can't browse and link each and every authority site--without going though their policies.
I won't do such a job for even $750/m --but $XXXX/month for this specialists job- I might think twice before refusing:p

Funny, I have the same policy. Time to add it to my terms of use.

That link policy is total nonsense and not legally enforceable. Just because someone writes something in a legal looking document does not mean a court will enforce it.

However, in the US at least, there may be some legal issues with regards to deep linking.

    From:
    http://www.avivadirectory.com/blogger-law/

"Currently, there is no law that explicitly bans all deep linking to content you do not own. However, courts have declared that individual deep links are in violation of state law if they are not cited correctly. Thus, it is clear that passing off someone else’s work as your own by linking to a site in a manner in which it appears that the linked to content is a part of your site, is considered copyright infringement and it violates state laws that govern competitive business practices. But, it also appears that if you make it clear that the deep link you are providing isn’t to your own site then you are in the clear. The leading case in this area is Ticketmaster Corp. v. Tickets.com, Inc. where TicketMaster argued that a deep link by Tickets.com to a TicketMaster actual ticket purchase page was a copyright infringement because traffic was routed through the back door of the site. Thus far, however, no court has found that deep linking by a blogger is a copyright infringement or trespass."

That being said, the chance of there being any legal liability, in the United States, for adding a link to your directory is virtually zero. If someone complains that you've done this, just delete the link and move on.

Thanks Jeff- for the heads-up. I just want to steer clear away from any sort of trouble.
    Thats my sole intention:)
I have been analyzing dir.yahoo.com and see that they have lots of deeplinks specific to the topic. Lemme see how much I can learn --from it:p

There is easiest way to see if a site is of good quality or not

Just index other directories and see whether their link is in them or not

by that you can find whether the site is of good quality or not!

offtopic:I did not even suspect you that you gave me Red

This is called falling into the trap by mouth ( I rememebr a proverb in my Language but I did not know into translate into tamil)
