The query [related:] will list web pages that are "similar" to a specified web page. For instance, [related:www.google.com] will list web pages that are similar to the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the "related:" and the web page url.

Hmm. I know what it is but does it mean anything? How is it calculated? For example how can a shitty PR 0 web directory be related to my web design site?

I'll be interesting to know how it's calculated... I also get "related" sites that have nothing to do with my sites theme.

Any idea how google calculates these?

That related query gets calculated by :

    1. Incoming links.

Ex. If you have incoming links from site X and site Y ... At related:www.yoursite.com, you will see Site X and Site Y.

Now .. The related site only shows about 30 websites. If for example you have 4000 incoming links from 4000 different domains, the most frequent ones, or the ones that link to you with the most number of links appear.

    2. Outgoing links.

Ex. If you link to site X and site Y ... At related:www.yoursite.com, you will see Site X and Site Y.

Now .. The related site only shows about 30 websites. If for example you have 4000 outgoing links to 4000 different domains, the most frequent ones, or the ones that you link most often will appear (ex. site-wides)

    3. If you do not link to anyone, or if anyone does not link to you, Google can not decide what websites are related to your website (because no other website defines your theme, or you do not link to any other website, to let google know your niche), so at related:www.yousite.com , you will have 0 links.

    If i helped, i'm glad :)

Yes that is true but there is more to it than that. I have no link to the PR 0 web directory and that site is not linking to me. Also it shows up other web design companies so it also looks at the theme and text. I have for example a few sentenced about a directory on the front page.

ok, it doesn't matter and I don't think it is any problem. Just interesting to speak about. The site is JW-Webbdesign.se but it's in Swedish :)

    Thanks anyway.

Also, being linked to from an authoritative, well categorized site/page with similar sites also linked up.
If you are in the DMOZ, you are likely to see a few from your category.
