cpsrvd & pop failed

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by egdcltd, May 22, 2007.

Okay, according to cpanel, both cpsrvd & pop have failed. What does this mean, and what can I do about it? I know pretty much nothing about running a server; I can login to root via putty and that's pretty much it. Searched for help, but it didn't mean anything to me. Any dumbed-down input would be appreciated.

cpsrvd is the CPanel server deamon and it fails all the time.
POP is your POP mail service.

Log into WHM and restart them. If the problem persists, contact your hosting provider.

I went into WHM and restarted cppop, but that didn't affect the pop failure.

Unfortunately, I'm currently on unmanaged hosting, so support is a bit limited. The entire cpanel backend went down earlier, and they restarted the server for me, but those two services are still isted as failed.

Are all of your services functional though?
It might just be 'chkservd' that needs restarted. Chkservd is responsible for monitoring the services and ensuring they're up and functional.

    Try the following via shell:
    service chkservd restart

    That should handle things :)

Also, when things like that happen check if your server is overloaded, most of the times services start failing when load is high. Login to your server as root and run "top", if the load is high check the services on top.

    Good luck ;)

    Did you get an email?

    From

    Subject: cpsrvd on blahblah.com failed

Body: cpsrvd failed @ Tue May 22 14:52:53 2007. A restart was attempted automagicly.

    Is this?

If yes, then whenever you do restart the server of specific service being monitored in "Service Status" page in WHM, you'll get it. Its normal, no need tho worry.

If you're able to use WHM, the cpsrvd is up. Its cPanel server which runs cPanel and WHM.

How do I check if everything is functional? cpsrvd & pop are the only things saying they've failed.

So, I log into root via Putty, the type that command and enter? (Really don't know much about this at all)

Ran top, and got a lot of information that didn't mean much to me. Nothing seemed overloaded, and server status in cPanel is only showing cpsrvd and pop as having failed. Memory, cpu usage and swap all show fine

    No, no email

    lol.

WHM is accessible and cpsrvd is down

    OK. Try this:

    1. Give your server a forced reboot since it can be problem in cpanel and it wont be back online by graceful.
    2. If the cpsrvd and POP are still red after 15 minutes since the server came online, login to SSH.
    /scripts/upcp
    /scripts/fixeverything
    /etc/init.d/cpanel restart
    3. If there's still error, try this
    /scripts/upcp --force
    /scripts/fixeverything
    /etc/init.d/cpanel restart

If it still does not solves the problem, please let me know.

Okay. How do I do that? And can I wreck anything doing it?

Go to your WHM, on the left panel, you'll have a link

    "Forceful Server Reboot"

    Click it.

Yes, you can since it immediately turns the server down. But usually, thats not a problem for servers since they are made tough enough. Though, graceful may get your server down for few hours until you request reboot from DataCenter.

Can't seem to find anything in the left panel to do with rebooting the server.

Here's a list of the options displayed

I was checking something, and apparently I can reboot from root by logging in via putty, and using the command "reboot". Is this a good idea?

egdcltd - i don't understand how you have a dedicated server/VPS running WHM/CPanel but there is not reboot options? Something seems amiss here.

Yes you can reboot via SSH

Looks like a Reseller Account. Not VDS.

VDS have a restart option as well as IP FUnctions and Disk Usage.

Her's original from my old VDS
There are dozens of things missing.

That's very true it does, but he has root access, as he can restart individual services which is why i questioned it :)

If by VDS you mean Virtual Dedicated Server, no it's actually a dedicated. So not a reseller either I would say.

I'll give it a try rebooting via putty.

If it's a dedicated server you should be having full root access and the force and graceful reboot options should be present in your WHM panel, if it's not i'd take that up with the DC.

Sure buddy, give it a try via putty and let us know how you get on :)

If I create a reseller account and then, I give him normal ssh access, thats fine! You can control every aspect of it!

Its NOT a VDS, trust me.
