Is "Click Here" redunant?

I am restructuring a site that is really for non tech savvy people - old horse racing fans.

The site is full of, "click here to read more" etc

I've been told that if it wasn't structured like this, visitors wouldn't know that it was a link - even though it's blue, underlined and descriptive (by descriptive I mean "download this product" as opposed to "click here to download this product"

    Are people really this ignorant?

I believe that most everyone is able to recoginze a link when they see one. However "click here" has no value at all for SEO or SERPs.

You should use appropriate keywords for an anchor. You could still have the click here right before the actual hyperlink if you feel that you need it.

"download this product" is much better than "click here to download this product"

Yeah I have considered having something like click here to download this product

    Or

click here to download this product

I prefer the first one as it is less cryptic - but I still hate 'click here' as a rule - Its pointless, annoying and not SEO friendly.

Does anyone know anyone that is new to the internet, perhaps you could ask them what they think?

Lol, I clicked on the blue just now, instinctively.

Guess that proves that anyone with two bits of knowledge and would see an outstanding link would know it to be a link to click.

Blue performs good in adsense and not without reason.

Yeah, but you had to learn that blue underline means it's a link. I think the visitors to the site are mainly old men, who don't use the internet much and therefore only know "click here" means it's clickable.

I'm setting up a split test using Crazy Egg - click here to go to the crazy egg site :D

So hopefully I will have meaningful data.

click here and making it hiperlink is something that should be avoided!
perhaps you should write some specific information about the download or links, try avoiding the click here stuffs,

It is always best to be more descriptive with your links, when I will code a site I must always remember some people are clueless to the web and everyting must be made clear and easy to understand.

try blue and UNDERLINE, that often helps, and change the cursor when it hovers
