Is social bookmarking a good SEO tactic? I recently signed up for a bunch of social bookmarking sites because an article directory allows you to submit things to them by clicking the buttons, but does that actually help with SEO?
I dont think you could consider it a tactic. You should write high quality and interesting content that will get bookmarked by itself. There is no real value in a story thats been digged a couple of times. The real Social Bookmarking Tactic comes when you get featured and get tons of inbound links.
if there is not nofollow on the social bookmark site, it will help you. for example, links on delicous will not help you beause they are using nofollow in their outgoing links
I think social bookmarking is the best choice for traffic and have only less importance in SEO ! bookmarking can bring ur site a great traffic !
I bookmark most of my pages, and every now and then it is quite useful. For example, digg users might not find your site if it hasn't been bookmarked already.
most social bookmark sites use the nofollow tag......On an ecommerce I manage I find that it brings in targeted traffic that convert well when people bookmark the products....
Yeah I was reading a lot of them use nofollow, so I guess it's not very good. Why do they use nofollow? I don't get it.
Hm. Well I just got into Stumbleupon today (my site is http://magnalifeodin.stumbleupon.com/ add me as a friend, vote for my site and I'll do the same for you!) I do see potential in social bookmarketing and other social networking sites. My Squidoo lenses are on the front page of Google for my targeted keywords, with minimal work. So this is a big plus.

Agree but it's an exposure and if your site is interesting people might put your link on their websites and you'll get some backlinks as well.
But seriously, why do they do this? Do they do it to "decourage" (can't think of a better word, even though that's a fake word) people from spamming?
It helps a lot.I last month bookmarked my site in stumbleupon and i was getting very much traffic.I didn't do it this month so not much traffic coming in.
Traffic yes, getting higher search rankings... not so much. The only real possibility of increasing search rank through Social Networking is if people blog about you and link to your site.
