I have heard of it and have been on the site as it's for Australians as well. Although it's not as popular here in Oz.
I posted an advert on the Oz Gumtree and have had 5 visitors from there but none have contacted the site as yet (I'll let everybody know if they do!). I should compile a report as to which cities give best response so I'll put an outline of it here too when I actually get round to doing it
Gumtree used to be pretty much London based, but now it's expanding fairly rapidly to take in other cities both in and outside of the UK. Probably explained by it being taken over by eBay last year I think.
About London Gumtree: I've discovered that I can put ads on every city site apart from London. Perhaps because it's so established it doesn't need good advertising content. Also, I've discovered how they make their money (apart from advertisers on their site - mainly recruitment). After 3 days you are given the option to resubmit - this entails a text or call (costs £1.50 a time). I think (if the original free advert I placed works) I might be tempted to use it! Whatever, it's still an interesting site to look at - people advertise the weirdest things!
first time i've heard of it, is it similar to craigslist from the US? Could work well in the UK and i heard ebay bought it a few months back.
In some categories you get free adverts (as many UK cities as you like) AND you get an email which bumps it up to the top of the list after 7 days. Other categories you get a free advert for 3 days and you can pay (either via text or calling premium rate number - it costs £1.50) to re-issue and bump up.
I've added my two most popular adverts from Gumtree on Craigslist and I'll let you know how the latter performs
Its a UK version of Craigslist. I wouldn't really think of it as a form of long term web promotion unles syou have something that appeals regionally and fits in with what GumTree is used for. there are a few tips and tricks for getting short term links from Craigslist and GumTree, but they delete the posts automatically after 30 days so I dont see the point. There are easier ways to get quality links to your site.
hi just found this new site , its a classifieds like craigslist.org and gumtree.org but much better and 100 % free of cost called http:.//www.poopka.co.uk i was looking for a job and found one 15 minutes of looking on the site. genuine ads. it is uk based but they are going to be adding other countries including us very soon. gumtree vs poopka. poopka wins. i am a poopka fan for sure.
Gumtree email to ask if you want your advert "bumped up" the list and do it for nothing every 7 days. Does Craigslist do that? I have had nothing from Craigslist but Gumtree is consistently one of my tope referrers. I'm going to check out poopka now and I'll let you know how that works out.
I have had mixed experiences of Gumtree. I posted the same ad advertising our locally based business on three occasions (as it had dropped down the listings - I could have legitimately reposted more frequently but was too busy). The first time, the ad stayed up. The second and third times, I received an email to say the ad had been submitted, but could not see the ad. It had been removed almost as soon as it was published but Gumtree did not have the courtesy to tell me this, or why. Some weeks later, these deleted postings were on the first page of Google results - but when you clicked them, they went straight to advertising for our competitors!! I emailed Gumtree twice, and they ignored my email. I then tracked down a phone number for Gumtree; they would not discuss it over the phone but I did get another email for a manager. Eventually, I did get a reply which told me that there had been an individual "reporting" a large number of posts in this category to get them pulled, either as dirty tricks to knock out the competition or some form of mental illness. But it didn't tell me what Gumtree had done about it, or proposed to do. Gumtree operates the same automatic report-based deletion as Craigslist but Craigslist is at least honest about it. Gumtree's "Your post was pulled" message states that the message has been removed by a member of staff; as I understand it, this is untrue as Gumtree staff do not manually review deletions. Jenny
SPAM!!!!! I used gumtree before and I got traffic from it......I picked up a new partner because of it
I've tried to visit http:.//www.poopka.co.uk just now and a few days ago when it was first mentioned here - I get a blank page so I'm wondering if these http:.//www.poopka.co.uk references are a wind up?
lol @ http:.//www.poopka.co.uk the website does look abit like Google, with the font types and colours
Gumtree is cool and a great source of pulling in a good amount of traffic as it has gained a lot of popularity recently. Thumbs up for it.
